CPO question (Certified Pre-Owned)

I am buying a 2013 Hyundai Genesis from a Hyundai dealer in NJ with 3,500 miles (yes that is accurate). Manufacture Date: 8/29/2013 and originally sold 02/20/2014 Originally on the phone the salesman said the vehicle was CPO but when I arrived at the dealer they said it wasn't and tried to sell me the 10 yr/100000 warranty through fidelity for 2490. I called Hyundai USA and they said it is up to the dealer to make a vehicle CPO.

I just looked at the Hyundai web site for CPO and they do not show any 2013 models. I wonder if your 2013 does not meet the qualifications for model year.

Remember, everything is negotiable and he can sell you the warranty at a lower price or reduce the selling price. It is up to you to determine if the total package is a good deal. I have no idea if Fidelity is reputable or not so check them out. I've seen negative reviews for many warranty companies so be careful. Perhaps others here can suggest from their experience.

CPO is a designation that can optionally be added by any Hyundai dealer that sells a used Hyundai prior to the normal 5 year - 60K mile warranty running out. The dealer has to pay Hyundai Motor America approximately $1000 to make a used car a CPO, which restores the 10 year - 100K mile powertrain warranty normally for the original owner only. The reason for the dealer paying HMA is that the CPO warranty (for powertrain) is offered by HMA and good at any dealer.

The dealer is also "supposed" to do an inspection of the CPO car and fix any problems, but many forum members have reported that the inspection is frequently not done or not done thoroughly (although the dealer will usually fix any problems that the buyer finds soon after purchase).

I am not sure if the dealer can still make it a CPO, or whether it is too late for that particle VIN. But I would make them give you $1000 off the third party warranty for using the bait and switch tactic of telling you it was CPO on the phone, when it wasn't. I would file a complaint with various consumer watchdog agencies if they don't agree to that.
