  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I was looking at Consumer Reports to see what the perspective of reliability is on my Genesis and saw a low rating about the fuel system.

Does anyone here have thoughts on why consumers think this is a problem? I think I can understand with my V6 that the performance may be viewed as "lacking" compared to other makes (like BMW, Mercedes and Lexus) but I didn't think this would figure into a reliability assessment.

Does anyone here have or have had real problems with the fuel system performance of their Genesis? It's a mystery to me.

Welp, my fuel cap valve failed and threw a check engine light, which my dealer replaced under warranty.

Makes no sense to me. There is no yelling and screaming about fuel injectors and high pressure fuel pumps like a few other manufacturers. In fact, from this forum and overall reputation of the Genesis, I'd say the fuel system is a strength of the car.

Maybe it is related to GDI issues. Those surveys are done by CR subscribers once a year. Sometimes, even if the complaint is minor, it will show up as a black mark in the stats based on the number of complaints (as opposed to the severity of complaints).

I guess it's conceivable that stained rear bumper/tail pipes are a fuel system reliability deficiency. Hmm. Can you see my eyes roll?

Could also be related to excess oil consumption with 5.0 GDI engines (which seems to been solved for some by using full synthetic 5W-30, 0W-30 or above).

Keep in mind that as engines get more reliable (which they definitely have over the last 25 years) it doesn't take much of a "problem" to cause a "below average" rating.

2010 V6 had a bad oxygen sensor that was replace under warranty. This is fuel system related.

O2 sensor should be an emissions item, not fuel system.

Consumer Reports lists the best recommended upscale sedan as the Genny 3.8.

The fuel system was given low ratings only in '09 and '10. It then was rated 'better' and 'above average' the following two years.

The Consumer Reports new car recommendations are not directly related to the reliability ratings. The reliability ratings are determined by a survey sent out to subscribers once a year where customers fill out evaluations for any cars, appliances, electronic gear, etc they own, and what problems they have had. They results are calculated and compared to other models and are not subjective evaluations made by Consumer Reports employees.

The new car recommendations are subjective evaluations made by Consumer Reports employees, although the people who do the evaluations obviously look at the reliability ratings (at least at Consumers Reports they do).

I guess if it was '09 and '10 it was not GDI. But I remember that there were problems the first couple years with fuel doors not opening, and also problems with gasoline fumes inside the car after fill-up. A fair number of thread in this forum back then on these issues.

Yeah, I don't think GDI is the primary culprit here since it is only a more recent development in the Genesis.

Attached is the chart for the Genesis. Interesting that they give it a worse than average overall reliability rating for 2012. I suspect it mostly has to do with the audio/NAV system.

Regardless, the fuel system getting a worse than average for 2009-2010 seems odd. I wonder if consumers are complaining about gas mileage???

In 2009 3.8 model there was a problem with the TPS (throttle position sensor)
which cause some owners serious stall outs, etc. Hyundai had a TSB and replaced mine (and others) under warranty.

Maybe some buyers are complaining about that MPG window sticker problem.

It was pointed out by Jimmmmbo! that the low reliability rating (fuel system) was for 2009 and 2010 only. A pic of the CR reliability ratings matrix for the Genesis was posted by Jimmmmbo! above.

In this forum there are a fair number of threads/posts from that period about problems with fuel door not opening, and also gas fumes inside the car after fill-up.
