  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So, unexpectedly the crack in the front shield somehow originated but from inside; outside surface of the windshield is OK for now. See the pics.

At the dealer: no warranty (the car is still under 5 year warranty - 2015). My insurance deductible is $500, so it's frustrating.

Haven't seen anything like it before. 20200211_084840.webp20200211_084853.webp20200211_084859.webp

Why would you expect warranty to cover it? Windshields break every day for a variety of reasons. That is why most insurance companies offer full glass coverage for a rather low rate. Some states even require it.

It may have been stressed by a stone that hit it two weeks ago, a bird strike, a temperature difference in a car wash, pouring hot water on an iced windshield, hot defroster, a pissed off neighbor. Inside crack is often thermal stress. Happens a lot on tempered glass.

Check into that full glass coverage as it may happen again. I've had a few replaced in my life. five that I can quickly think of.

I'll check it, thanks; but yes, probably a thermal shock, it's cold in Chicago but, still, if it's thermal, it's ridiculous - it happened during day after I remotely started it.

You're not alone.
How to defrost windshield without breaking it

You can throw cold water on it, but even better, and safer, says Mike Andrews of Reliable Auto Glass in Rohnert Park, is to start your car, turn on the heater for five minutes, thus warming up the car and windshield, and THEN turn on your defroster. If you turn on your defroster right away, he says, you also might crack your windshield, especially newer cars where the defroster air heats up quickly.

He says that after those five minutes he typically finds he can just use his wipers to push off the ice or frost.

Andrews says this week he’s replaced one windshield of a customer who tossed warm water on it and two of customers who had immediately turned on their defrosters.

Good info EdP!! Don't think you have to worry to much about "defrosting" down in the "sunshine state";)

I don’t carry glass coverage but per my agent my comprehensive does cover my glass with a $100 deductible.

Most states will cover glass under your comprehensive coverage. My advice is for everyone to call their agents and ask for a ZERO deductible on comp. The difference for my cars between a $500 and a Zero deductible was only about $12 every 6 mts so I have a zero deductible on all my cars. It's a no brainer.

I've had that happen during the summer before - get in car, turn on AC & POP!

I had the exact same thing happen to my car, but the crack went from the bottom edge of the windshield all the way up to the top edge. It
was cracked on the inside only, no damage to outside of the glass. Went to the dealer and they covered it under warranty no questions asked.

I would understand them not covering it if it was due to stress or impact from something external, but the damage was all from the inside.
When they removed the glass, they noticed that there was a chip at the bottom edge of the windshield. This was purely a manufacturing or installation defect by Hyundai.

Don't jump to conclusions and suggest going through insurance when that may not be the correct solution. I would blame the manufacturer as well if the glass broke from inside.

Anyone who says that they need to follow some convoluted process to defrost the glass in order to not have it crack, is probably smoking crack. I've own at least a dozen cars in my short lifetime and not once has an internal crack happened and not once have i had to do multiple steps to defrost my windshield "safely". That's just dumb. It's more than likely a defective windshield to begin with.

OP, you should push harder for replacement under warranty. Why involve insurance when you don't have to? You all know how insurance companies are and they will find even the smallest of reasons to increase your premiums come renewal time.

This same thing just happened to me. Although my G70 is 2019, it only has 4k miles and sits in heated garage. This happened in early August in Seattle, however, my garage NEVER gets either hot or cold. And like the other reports, there is no impact at all. Presently dealer is saying it isn't under warranty, but will continue to deal with this. There is essentially no way that this was a road accident nor a fluke.

I have a 2022 GV80-only has 2600 miles on it. The front windshield cracked from the bottom up into a huge hook like crack. Also-my front side passenger triangular window in front of regular roll down window spider cracked without anything hitting it. I live in Florida-no snow or dramatic weather changes.
