  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Damn careless dealers

I don't know of many car dealer service and/or parts departments that don't take AMX (never saw one that didn't and I owned Toyota's for the last 17 years and Honda before that). I know at one time AMX was not accepted everywhere, but it is increasingly unusual to find a retailer that doesn't take it (unless they are very small).

I would bet a lot of money that percentage of Hyundai owners who have an AMX card is lower than Toyota or Honda owners on average. Obviously that would not be true of Genesis owners, but Hyundai still sells a lot more of the other cars.

Way to casually insult a whole lot of people!

Amex processing fees tend to be a little higher, so this is going to primarily be about volume. Bigger dealerships will get better rates, and so it will make more sense to accept more cards. Smaller dealerships, or ones that are not part of larger dealer networks, will often limit their card choices because of those fees.

If you want to offer a complaint that a dealer does not accept a particular brand of plastic, that's fine, since it is a convenience thing. Jumping to conclusions about a whole group of people based on a single external identifier, though. . . what up with that?

If you had a choice has a business owner to lower margins 2-3 % or 4-6% which would you choose? It;s a matter of the fee that Amex charges. A client base not having the card (according to some) has no bearing on them accepting it. I think Hyundai sales being so high solidifies that they know what there doing.

All three of the dealers I've taken my Hyundais over the years for service and parts have taken AmEx. The dealer I bought the Genesis from even would take AmEx for a portion of the sales price/down payment (based on Zag participation with the AmEx affinity group).

I don't think it has anything to do with market penetration of American Express or the demographic that may use the card. It has much more to do with the processing fees. It's really a decision by a business of whether to eat the additional point and a half versus losing the business to a competitor who does take it.

Given that pretty much anyone accepts Visa/MC and most people who use credit cards has one of those, anything above that is pretty much just a way to encourage sales from brand loyalists (or maybe those deeply in consumer debt who are trying to spread it around). There's not really much other reason to accept JCB, Discover, Diners Club, and any of the other boutique cards.

One of the most brilliant things AmEx ever did. Been my primary card for over 10 years, and have gotten thousands worth in rewards points :)

moved to the dealership forum:)

If you read my initial post, you can see that the AMX thing was not the only reason I mentioned the "different class of people" thing. I know what I said is a bit harsh, but having spent time at 5 different Hyundai dealers in my area recently, I have noticed that there is a difference.

I'm going to reign in my response out of respect for the harmony of the forum. Suffice it to say that I find these comments offensive.

1.) Thank you for the **'s...that was very thoughtful!
2.) This is where this thread belongs..."DEALERSHIP EXPERIENCES!" Why would anybody want to look at it in any other place?? In fact, If I saw this thread in "Electrical, Lighting..." subforum, I would let the mods know it needed to be moved.
3.) You are correct, your thread has been taken over by AMERICAN EXPRESS issues.

Here ya go..."GUYS, LETS KEEP IT ON TOPIC" ripped leather seats;)
