  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I recently purchased a dashcam - Mobius Action Full HD Camera - and am now recording practically every time I drive. It's starts and stops automatically, it records in 1080p with a FOV of 120 degrees (approx), it's tiny - weighs only 38grams, measures 61mm (L) x 35mm (W) x 18mm (H) and finally it loops the recordings so I will always have the last about 15 or so hours available in blocks of 15 mins (can be changed).

When I have something interesting on file, I will post it. If you have a dashcam, please do the same.

The Mobius Action Full HD Camera runs about $85 including a suction cup mount. The TechMoan guy has a very indepth review of the camera here.

Yes, this is great dash cam, especially for the price. I have two of those, in my Geny and in my minivan.

Where do you have it mounted ? Do you have a picture ?

It's mounted to the right of my rearview mirror, just a tad lower, so I can hardly see it. I'll post of few pics and some videos in the near future.

I'm going to ask what may be a stupid question and there's an obvious answer, why would a person want to tape what's happening on the road ahead of them? My brother has been doing it for years, I've never seen the point of it. Could someone enlighten me??

go to youtube and search russian dash cam, you will want to buy a camera immediately

Video documentation from a dash cam can come in handy when it's your word against another driver's following an accident.

I mounted dashcams, front and rear of both my cars a month ago, and they have already paid for themselves!
The girl in the blue compact makes a dumb, but legal U-turn, while the guy in the Dodge minivan (who must have been texting), just drives into the rear of my car.
The Kicker: the guy in the van jumps out after we pull to the side and accuses me of pulling in front of him, in his lane, and slamming on my brakes!
As soon as pointed out the dashcams, and explained how they would show him to be a liar... he started apologizing and offered to pay for damages. BTW, the Cary,NC cop who passed us as this happened, never stopped or came back.
So Moral of the Story People: get yourself some Dash Cams Now! ...and not just front, the one mounted on the rear window would have made this case.

I have front and rear dash cams in both of my cars, Geny and minivan.

And here is more reading.

I do it primarily because I encounter a shit load of hazardous drivers and I truly fear I will end up needing the video evidence in court one day. Secondarily because I see some sweet rides from time to time (I love Lamborghinis and Ferraris). Tertiarily because I've seen a couple of astounding accidents in front of me, and i would love to catch those on video.

I can see having one to cover your arse in court if you are involved in a crash where fault is an issue. By the same token, I've been driving for more than a few years all across Canada and the USA, my guess, it was more than thirty years ago when I was involved in a bad wreck, camera wouldn't have made a difference because the blame was completely with the other car. Mind you, a video of it would have been interesting, especially if it shows the colour of underwear after the wreck ... LOL!!!! Otherwise, I'd have a pile of useless video. Good way of boring the in-laws when they come over for a visit .... <G>

All said and done, if you enjoy taking a video out your windshield, more power to you!!

Qbedobedoo- could you post where you sourced the usb connection for power?
I am very interested in installing one in the front and rear of my car, but not certain where to get the usb port for voltage.

I already converted the cig lighter to USB to power my phones.

I would want the install to be as clean looking as possible, and to not have wires coming down to my lighter.

That Mobius camera looks awesome. I just watched the Techmoan review, and have been to many of the places in Manchester where he is filming.

I am thinking I could run this from somewhere in the car to power the cameras. one port for the front, one port for the back.

or better yet, one of these, then i wouldnt have to run a long usb cable from the power supply

At the moment I take the camera in to my PC after each trip, to charge it, so I don't have it powered in the car. Will change as soon as I have time to install/hide the cable.

No one in their right mind would sit and watch their daily commute in and out.. but just in case something happens, you DO have it on video.

I love my dash cam. Once in a while I post videos on youtube. Not sure anyone ever watches them, but hey.

I understand that footage might come in handy in rare situations to prove fault in an accident or some other type of situation. I wonder if it could ever be used against you (e.g. you are in a bad accident and some law enforcement or other person removes it from your vehicle w/o consent)...

Most of us "generally" responsible drivers don't worry about such concerns. However, folks who like to get drunk and race against motorcycles probably should not purchase such a dash cam.

It would take me just a split second to "lose" my SD card LOL. And that's if the officer even noticed my camera; unless you're looking for one, you're not gonna see it that easily.

I don't know why... but I don't think I'd easily disclose that I have a dash cam if I get into situations where it will help me. After being rear ended by a guy who showed an insurance card and ended up not having insurance at all (10+ years ago), I've become a real cynic; I would definitely disclose it if an officer asked me the question, but if it was a situation where someone is trying to claim I'm at fault when I'm not? OH NO... I'm gonna take it to court, and then I'm gonna clean you out and/or press charges, depending on how bad you screwed up.

I'm a responsible driver, and I don't take kindly to folks who don't respect the rules of the road.
