Dealer used 5w-20?

For curiosity's sake...

I received some paperwork with my car that indicates the dealer performed an oil change after taking this car in trade and used 5w-20. Nowhere in my owner's manual does it say this is okay for the 3.8. Manual says 5w30 or 10w30 depending on temperature.

I been all around Bob Is The Oil Guy, I know one 5w20 might be as thick as some 5w30's... and I don't feel there would be any major problems because of this -- and I prefer to do my own oil changes... -- but still? Shouldn't they have used a 30wt oil and could I get a free LOF out of this to rectify if I mentioned it?

Again, I bought some of my own synthetic 5w30 I plan on using that meets their specs... but it still bothers me that they'd use the wrong weight.

Just because it's on the repair order, doesn't mean that's what they put in it. Most parts guys just bill oil out, without paying attention to what it actually takes. Our system automatically populates the parts needed and bills them out on it's own when the repair order is written up. it is wrong some times, so that could be the case. I doubt putting 5w20 in there for 1 oil change is going to hurt it, so just switch back to 5w30 on the next one.

They probably did use 5W-20 since that is what is recommended for the 5.0 V8. However the V6 specifically recommends 5W-30, so that is what I would use. In fact, at one time, 5W-20 was recommended for the 3.8L V6, but they raised that to 5W-30, so I assume there is some good reason for that.

This is why I do my own oil changes. I have only used synthetic oil for the last 20 years, and never noticed any change in oil level between oil changes while doing so. I use Mobil 1 5W-30 EP in my 3.8L V6 (non-GDI engine).

So while 5W-20 is recommended for some Hyundai engines, not for the 3.8L V6 GDI engine.

You are correct about that. The one (and only) time I had the Hyundai dealer change my oil (when my car was in for a recall), I asked if it was OK if they used the oil I provided and had put in the trunk. The service advisor said that was fine and they would knock off something from the price of the oil change since I supplied my own oil (I don't recall the exact amount).

When the service advisor printed out the work order for me to sign, I asked how the technician is going to know to use customer supplied oil? He showed me where the instructions to use my oil was printed out by the computer on the work order. I had also previously attached a note to the oil filler cap that said "Use Oil in Trunk."

When the work was done and I got the invoice from the cashier, they charged me for the oil, so I told the cashier there was some mistake. She went into the shop and about 15 minutes later came back and said I was correct and removed the cost of the oil. The 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 was missing, but the 1 quart container was unopened (my Genesis takes 5.5 quarts). When I got home, I checked the oil level and it was one quart high. Coupled with the fact that I didn't even know if they really used my Mobil 1 oil I supplied, I decided to change the oil and filter at home.

I figured one mistake I may have made is when I stuck the note on the oil filler cap about my oil in the trunk (an adhesive backed label), that it was in English instead of Spanish.

But absolutely GD right, just because something is written on the work order doesn't mean anything.

As God is my witness, I’ll never be hungry again never let a Hyundai dealer change my oil again.

That sucks but I'm totally opposite, I'm never plainnign to change my own oil, nor will I use a Jiffy Lube, I'll gladly take my Gen to the dealer to get my oil changed and car washed. They always mail us coupons so price isn't too bad and plus they are on the hook for things if something were to go wrong vs. if I mess something up.

Jiffy Lube is the last place on earth (or anywhere in the universe) to get an oil change. More corruption at that chain than in the La Cosa Nostra.

Thanks folks, you've all been re-assuring. I also doubt it would bother it for 1 interval.

Related question -- they have me set up for "severe" schedule. I'm pretty sure the previous owner who lived in suburban NJ qualified for severe under the stop-and-go qualifier.... however, I'm in rural NY... I should probably get them to switch that, no? In case they say I wasn't following the specified program?
