Does Connected services include map updates?

As you all know we got the connected care, remote and guidance packages free for 3 years. And also we got annual map updates too for that same time period. Just bought out my lease after 3 yrs & renewed all 3 packages, but was wondering if “annual map updates” are included with any of those 3 packages or was that something separate? I could ask them, but assuming someone here knows for sure!

No, map updates are separate. I no longer have connected services but was able to download the map update for free. Usually twice a year.

I’m tech stupid & preferred the SD card mailed to me. Is that available for free too by any chance? Why would they offer the download for free only?

There's little to no incremental cost to them for the downloads. To provide it on a card, they have to buy the cards and pay for shipping. Why would they not charge for that and make the downloads free?
I think they will ship you the cards for free for up to three years. After that, the charge for the card is very reasonable, but shipping almost doubles your cost.

In your case, you plug an appropriate USB stick to your computer and the download software puts the update files on that USB drive, then you take that stick and plug it into the data USB in your car and follow the instructions. For older cards, an SD card is used instead of the USB stick.

Just hung up with customer care and annual map updates are free as long as you have the “guidance” package of connected services.
