I find my 2013 3.8's rain sensing skills to be more psychotic than psychic. The lightest of mist will often have the wipers going at warp speed regardless of setting, while a heavy downpour will see them taking their time deciding if they want to swish or not. On such occasions I simply flick the stalk to "LO"—which is generally fine for most Virginia storms.
That said, my MINI has the best auto wipers I've ever had. Were it not for the little green LED on the stalk, I'd forget they were on… Until, that is, a few drops steadily fall and they jump into action. And if they swipe three times within a certain amount of time, the car decides it must be raining and automatically turns on the headlight (and back off when the rain ends).
I'd not had a car do that before, and it is still one of the most thoughtful—and useful—features that all carmakers should do. After all, it's the law in VA… Wipers on… Lights on.
