  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Greetings. This is my first post after lurking for a month or so. Lots of great stuff here. I have a 3.8 with Tech package, 5 months old, broke 10k miles yesterday, and absolutely love the car. Maybe more on that later. However, the reason for this post.....

Urged on by this thread I decided to check out DVD Audio. I order Porcupine Tree's "Stupid Dreams" from Amazon, but after trying to load it several times, all I get is "Disc Error" :(

First I think it must be a bad disc, but it plays fine and sounds great on my mediocre home theatre system. I clean it anyway but no luck in the Genesis.

I had never actually played a DVD before (lots of solo driving, what's the point?), so I pop in of Lord of the Rings and it plays fine - nice picture and sound.

All other aspects of audio system and DIS seem to be working fine - CD's, MP3/CD's, MP3's on flash drive, MP3 player via Aux input (never owned an iPod, so can't comment on that). Worse thing I've noticed is that random play on MP3/CD's is not so random.

Any ideas? I'm hoping there might be an easy fix. I hate the thought of having major surgery performed by my dealer (What's a DVD-A? Bring it in, if it's not working, we may have to replace the "radio") to fix something that is barely broken.

I feel your pain on that one. Some DVD's work while others just don't. I've had a similar experience, but let's face it, we didn't buy the Genesis to watch movies in it. It's kind of a nice perk, and any store-bought movie title should work just fine in my limited experience. Look on the bright side, you bought a car with a DVD player, not a DVD player with a car!

I think he's talking about DVD Audio (high definition, surround sound audio), not DVD Video (which he says plays fine).

Considering many high end audio systems play DVD-A, especially when they have 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, I don't think it's unreasonable that it work. They showcase the audio system, and there's not a lot of options other than DVD's (audio or video) for multichannel sources (only one XM surround channel and possibly USB/iPod audio as alternatives.

I have a dozen or so DVD-A's and have had no problem playing any of them. I also have had no problem playing DVD's or any other media

Try to get your hands on another DVD-A - some discs and some players just don't get along, it does not mean that anything is wrong with the player though.

For a slightly more technical understanding of why this is - well, DVDs are more than one layer thick, and thus the laser needs to focus on the layer that it is reading. Different drives employ slightly different optical scanning mechanisms to help determine when the laser has focused, but some discs (combination of material and conditions when pressed) confuse some optical mechanisms, meaning that the laser is perpetually trying to refocus.

If other DVDs play all right, especially other DVD-As, then, even though that DVD-A works on your home system, but not in the car, you can write it off as a one off deal, or possibly even try to get a replacement, since a disc from a different lot might well not have that problem.

Best of luck.

Check to make sure your dvd audio is not a blu-ray format. It won't play in the genesis.

OK, here's the story. Went in for some service the other day and took the DVD-A with me. Tried it out in an identical vehicle on the lot, it played perfectly. In my vehicle - disc error. So I figured there is an issue with my player.

Today I recieved another DVD-A, same format, same record company, same band. Loaded it into the Genesis and it played!

Looks like MattG called it - first disc was a one off.
