EGR Need Cleaning and a small question

Hello all,


My 2012 Gen needs a passing smog check for a re-registration with DMV but the EGR is shown incomplete.

It just has a rebuilt engine replace the original broken one. I've been advised to put hundreds of miles on it for a smog check but almost 300 miles driven and EGR is not going away!

I'm thinking of cleaning the EGR valve with a Carburetor cleaner spray that I have available on hand. Is the EGR valve where the green arrow points? It's attached to the air filter box

I noticed an unused thread hole (red arrow) where I felt something is missing. Does anyone know what that hole is? Thank you very much.

Genesis engines do not have a traditional EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve, at least according to the service manuals that were once available from Hyundai. Instead, the continuously variable valve timing (CVVT) mechanism on the camshafts implements exhaust gas recirculation when appropriate. Thanks to the clean combustion possible with closed-loop fuel injection combined with CVVT, many older emissions specific parts are no longer needed on modern engines. Certain engine operating conditions however do require specific CVVT operation to increase EGR mimicing. Until you operate your vehicle in such conditions, the "EGR monitors" will not be "set" by the engine computer.

It was a more significant issue on the 2009 models. The "drive cycle" needed to set the EGR monitors involved some fairly aggressive highway accelerations. Use the SEARCH feature of this site to look for "EGR monitor" and you'll find many threads describing the drive cycle. If a dealer did the engine swap, making it smog-ready should be their responsibility.

As for the object in your picture, it looks more like the engine air inlet. The opening is likely just a spot for a mounting screw to hold some bracket or clip, used for other car models with the same engine. Quick test: get a clean rubber hose or soda straw. Fit it over the opening and try to blow into it. If the hole is clearly blocked, it's just a screw post. If you can blow through it, into the air piping of the engine, then that is worrysome. If air just blasts through it and comes out the backside, that too indicates it is a screw post.
