  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My steering wheel is stuck in one position and will not adjust. Is this a common problem? Is it something that can be easily corrected or is it tied in with other electronic devices? My car is 2009 Genesis sedan, 3.8 liter, with upgraded interior. I don’t have any other problems with similar devices. The vehicle has 108,000 miles and is in very good condition.

Try adjustment procedure from the attached PDF. It fixed it for me.

The early sedans used physical switches to detect when the steering tilt and telescope motions reached their travel limits; the switches would kill further motion in that direction. But when the switches get dirty/go bad they can prevent any motion. The same issue affects the power seat motion too - sense switches on the seat bottoms get dirty and fail.

Pop the lower instrument panel cover off and shine a flashlight at the steering wheel tilt/telescope mechanism. Look for a pair of flat metal arms, several inches long about an inch wide, with rectangular cutouts in them. The switch levers poke through those cutouts. Find one or both and wiggle it... a long screwdriver or wood chopstick helps. See if that makes a difference.

The whole tilt + telescope function is controlled by a small computer module (Hyundai calls it the "Steering Column Module" aka "SCM" in the service manuals. If that fails then the tilt/telescope is totally dead. And as always with any electrical issue check the fuses.
