  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi all.
Lurking here for a while, finally had my worst issue so far.
Had both alternator and starter replaced in the last month, and after the starter was replaced began to observe a "knocking" sound. It sounded closer to a sort of metallic tapping based on rpm, like something was bouncing off the front of the block.
Car would still drive and all electronics functioned well, so attempted to drive it home.
Didn't make it, car died again, and after a restart seemed to be in limp mode with incorrect timing. Will not sustain over 3k, and knocks all the way up. Only tested this once.
Had it towed to Hyundai, they are telling me engine is blown and repairs is 29k.
Have not seen diagnostics report yet, debating making a case with Hyundai Corporate.
Car has approx 69k miles.
Engine sound almost exactly matches this video:

Are you the original owner? If so, may still be in warranty. If not, you are SOL.

What year, mileage, engine and trim of Genesis is your car???

Im sorry you are experiencing this. That knock sound like dry lifters or rod knock (starvation of oil/fluids).
You would be better off finding an engine in a recycler yard, pulling it and installing yourself. They are trying to rip you off.
Worst is the engine is gone BUT take it back to your home, drain all fluids and refill (dont use factory specs of fluid! instead of 5w30 use 10w30 synthetic with like ATP-205). Cheaper option in my opinion. Good luck

If you've got a 5.0, I have a complete write up on how to swap the motor out and can answer any questions.

Having it done at a shop. I'd be more than happy to see that information though.

Weird that your engine is having a timing related issue with only 69k miles. The Genesis timing chain system is usually pretty good from my research.

However, frequent oil changes with a good quality synthetic oil is very important for any modern engine with timing chains since oil keep the chains, tensioners, guides, cam phasers, etc. lubricated.

Best advice is to follow the severe duty recommendation for oil changes which is usually about 3-5k miles intervals if you want a long lasting engine.

Another tip for alternators and starters; keep your battery fully charged as much as possible to reduce wear on those items. I usually hook my battery up to a battery tender atleast once a month to keep it topped off which reduces how much the charging system uses it. I think that starters burnout as well when trying to start a car with a weak battery over time.

Just my advice to best avoid(or postpone) timing and charging system issues.
