  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

My 2015 Genesis has a ticking noise. Had the oil changed and it's still there. Anyone know what it could be and if so how soon should it be taken care of? Thanks in advance.

Does it make any difference whether the engine is cold or warmed up?
Or how many miles you’ve driven?

In other words, is the noise always there, or does it go away after you’ve driven a noticeable distance?

The ticking noise could be from the high pressure fuel pumps; which is normal. Direct Injected engines are noisy like diesel engines.

However, if the ticking noise is new then it could be related to the timing chain system which is bad. The ticking could be from a loose timing chain or some other defective timing component.

My advice would be to let an mechanic check it or use a scan tool to check your engine timing data to see if they are out of spec.

It's been my experience that the timing chain rattle (if that's what the noise is) would be the most noticeable at cold start up - before tensioners, guides & etc. are fully pressurized and lubed.

True. Start-up noise(rattle) is fairly common on timing chain driven engines at start-up for a few seconds until the system is properly primed with oil.

However, if the rattling noise has became more pronounced in volume and duration; then it may be that some part of the timing system is failing or out of spec. Usually the timing chain tensioners or maybe even the VVT actuators.

I would first check to see if the oil level is correct. Running the engine with a lower amount of oil than required can cause issues with the timing system and more noise.

Some oil change shops(or mechanics in general) do not always top off an engine correctly or even tighten the drain bolt correctly. It is best to check them yourself.
