  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I am planning on doing some more DIY stuff once i get hydraulic jack. I've never done an oil change before but am wondering what most hyundai DIYers use for oil change. i've been taking mobil 1 synthetic to dealer but they provide the filter. is it worth the time to get hyundai filter from dealer (or get online), or is FRAM or mobil or whaever just as good or better?

I've been doing this for years: I bring my own oil (mobil1 full synthetic) and they provide an OEM filter.

Most of our members will tell you; stay away from aftermarket oil filters, it's not worth a hassle.

For many cars with spin-on metal canister filters, the after-market ones are OK or sometimes better than OEM. The Genesis uses a cartridge filter made by Mahle, and all the decent after-market ones are identical to the OEM, except for one made in China floating around that I would definitely not use. So yes, I would definitely get the OEM filter. It's not like some other cars where the after-market filters are often better.

Hyundai is picky about maintenance required to keep your warranty, and they will sometimes try every opportunity to deny a warranty claim if you do your own maintenance or don't use OEM parts. I am not saying that is legal, but they often try to weasel out of it if they can. Don't forget that on a new car, you are getting a 10 year -100 mile warranty on the engine, so they feel they have a right to be picky.

I do my own oil changes, air filter changes, and cabin filter changes. I usually buy the stuff online in bulk from an online Hyundai dealer to keep shipping charges low (instead of buying one at a time). There is usually no tax on out of state orders.

Keep meticulous records of the work you do, including all receipts. I also save the UPC code from the oil filter box. In addition to your own records, you can also document all your service work at www.myhyundai.com.

Note: If you happen to have a 2009 - 2011 Genesis V6, the OEM filter is made by Mann. I believe all the others are made by Mahle, who also makes the entire oil filtration housing and system.

for my 14 I simply order Mahle filters from Rockauto in bulk

What's the advantage over Hyundai OEM filters from an online Hyundai dealer? Mahle makes the Hyundai OEM filter, so they are the same.

If I ever have a warranty claim, I don't want to argue with a Hyundai dealer over whether I used the correct part.

Use OEM hyundai filters.

your right Mahle makes Hyundai filters.. they are identical and less expensive.

to each his own

Depends where you get the OEM filters. I usually get mine online in bulk (from online Hyundai dealer). When I have gone to the dealer parts department, I ask for the "discount price" and they always give it.
