Equus Oil Consumption

Anyone else have to continually top off their oil every 1000 miles or so? I bought a used 2012 with 52k. Changed the oil with Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 as soon as I bought it and after driving about 1500 miles I noticed my engine sounded a little harsh on cold startups. I checked the oil and it was below the Low mark. I topped it off with about 1.4 quarts to Full. After driving another 1000 miles I checked it again and it was near Low so added another quart. I'm reading that this is normal for some cars but wanted to see if others Equus owners experience the same issue. By the way, on my first top off I didn't have 5w20 on hand so I used 0w20 which I know is too light but figured a qt. wouldn't hurt. I've also read some people going to 5w30 which supposedly helps keep the oil from getting past the piston rings or installing a oil catch can? Will likely try 5w20 on my next oil change. I have no signs of oil leaks and zero smoke coming from the tail pipes. Where is this oil going?

I love this car and want her running at her best for a long time! Thanks in advance for comments and advice.

Sorry to hear about your issue. This post made me go outside and check my oil level just in case. I got my engine oil changed at the dealership back in March at 60K, and I've driven 2K since then. My car's been sitting with the engine off for 1 hour, and the dipstick level is at the "F" above the "full" dot.

All of the oil viscosities you've mentioned are more than fine IMHO, and I wouldn't hesitate to use any of it. My car has never seen anything outside of dealership bulk 5w-30. My oil change back in March cost me $36.53 all-in. Can't beat it. I'm willing to wager this car will go well over 200K using dealer bulk oil at ~ 6K intervals.

Engine oil consumption is predominantly caused by worn seals and gaskets, especially if it’s a high mileage engine. But at 52K, you're well under the 75K mark generally considered "high mileage." High mileage engine oil may help alleviate the issue by causing the seals to expand, but I would get the car checked out to confirm the issue before going this route. Your car is still under warranty, so you can always take it to the dealer if you trust them. Otherwise, a trip to your trusted indy seems in order.

I'm the second owner and Hyundai is not great about transferring that 10 year/100k warranty to the second owner. They reduce it to 6 year/60k which means i'm out of luck on getting any warranty repair. Thanks for your suggestions.

Common in 2012 engines due to bad rings. My 2012 ate no oil until 25000 miles, the about a quart/1000 miles.Hyundau replaced the engine.

Does a genesis 4.6 have such an oil consumption problem as 5.0 ?

I have the 5.0, and the only oil problem I have is a leaky cam carrier. If there is any oil consumption, its very minimal on mine. But its not even that bad, I dont know if Ive ever had to top up the oil before an oil change, and I just passed the 115k mile mark. I do my oil changes every 5k miles though.

How did you get Hyundai to replace the engine?

I had a great dealer. Car was under warranty, and after monitoring the consumption, the dealer convinced Hyundai to replace the engine with a new (not remanufactured one)
