In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. ESC Technology is Amazing

Regarding my other thread on ESC, I have plenty of experience in both rear wheel drive and winter driving, I have also taught many to drive in the snow. Therefore I was curious to learn first hand how the Genesis handled in the snow mostly because of all the negative posts.
I took this car to a snowy parking lot with a good amount of cars to test my winter driving skills against the Genesis.

First reaction was WTF because I could not do what I intended to do, “Test the cars handling” the reaction time of the ESC is automatic and instantaneous, there are no specific skills required.

After pondering what the car actually did I have to admit the ESC Technology is Amazing!!!!!

My reaction time is FAST but it can not compare to the ESC Technology.

To be more specific I intentionally tried to skid sideways so that I could judge the cars ability to perform under its weight distribution ratios and the cars ability to easily recover from a skid.

This car was able to correct the “planned skid” before I was able to react, Amazing!

It is nice, except when you don't want it to correct for you... ECS = No fun.

YES ! I also was very happy the way the car went in the heavy snow storm we had in nyc last weekend.... not 4 wheel drive but it worked just fine for a rear wheel drive car and others got stuck , spin outs , etc.. my genny kept flashing esc and got me home. safe & sound ...I was 20 miles away from home watching football giants game & got a call it's getting bad out so I left halftime ..... got caught right in middle of blizzard....had no clue of weather. I was in nyc apt & could not see how bad it was snowing .till I got outside
the ESC was amazing .............. and all I heard that the car was a nightmare in the snow ????
I was really happy how well it worked .
happy new year!!

In 15 months and 18,000+ miles, I have only observed the ESC light to flash briefly twice. Both times were turning starts in heavy rainstorms.

This is the only car in which I have never heard a squeal from the tires. I routinely take curves at 70 that I took at 55 with former cars. I hate the Dunlops for other reasons, but they do stick.

did you do a comparo w/out the ESC while in the parking lot?
My thoughts were you can have more control w/out the ESC.

Try BMW's xDrive, Tier one in terms of snow and traction control.

That and VCM, BMW's simulated "black ice" traction system that was put in BMW's M5 a while back, acing slalom tests in excess of 90MPH.

AWD Traction is far different than rear wheel drive platforms with a braking system monitoring all wheels. I wouldn't ever trust anything aside from xDrive.

I was cruising 17 Miles one way, and back, probably more fluctuating from 75-95MPH in over 9 Inches of snow in an X5. Two lane freeway from Illinois to Wisconsin.

Didn't slip one bit, felt like I was driving on dry asphalt in the middle of july, there wasn't two clear lanes either, everyone was driving in one screwed up path, like a snowmobile trail. I just passed every car there was at that speed without any problems.

But that's AWD xDrive. If the asian imports can't compete with that, then they're dead in the water, Audi and MB can't even come up with something to rival BMW's xDrive.

Other than that I still think the genesis looks too much like a Lexus LS when you look at it's profile of the car ( side view ), with it's scrunched and tightened front end giving it the drag performance over BMW and MB vehicles in it's class, I wonder what would happen if the car went from Mid-to Large Size sedan, to a full Large Size sedan among the likes of a BMW 750Li or MB S-Class.

Apparently the Equus is that competitor for hyundai, even though it's hideous and heavy losing on Fuel Economy with it's 5.0 V8 and 8-Speed tranny, the Genesis is better suited for a "performance" stab at being called a "Sports Sedan".

First thing those of you who don't know, BMW is first and foremost a Sports Sedan, then Luxury. Mercedes has always been about how fancy it can look on the inside and impress senior citizens with Money, then worries about sport and performance after the fact. Every German Enthusiast knows this in depth.

The only vehicle with the same technology competing against BMW in a very serious vein.

If you're educated enough, you'll know where to go from here!
Pay attention to the nissan with ESC, and how it's differentials are mentioned and act.

Though the vehicle behind compared to the M5 is a coupe (major performance advantage), it's still worth watching.

Though if it were a sedan, the GTR wouldn't exist like it does in this video!

A more fair fight would be the M6 Vs. the Nissan GTR, In which case the BMW would land slide it.

Did anyone ask about x drive or awd? This is a Genesis esc thread! What is the deal with you, you keep jumping in on how fantastic a BMW is, your handle says it all and you do not even own a Genny. TROLL!!

I wish you were educated enough to leave this Genesis form. Whatever you are trying to teach the former German car owners isn't working. Most of us know exactly what we drive and why, and don't need a whiz kid educating us the way you are trying to.

Sigh... no matter how many times I spray, the dandelions keep coming back.

LOL. Thanks and how true.

As for the Genney and ESC, I haven't driven it in snow. But I have taken some hard corners on dry roads where the ESC has stepped in and helped keep me from swapping ends. It's fun at times but sometiems seems to be a bit of overkill as the power level drops a lot. But at least I don't swap ends and it only hangs the tail out a little. ;)

xDrive vs Quattro or a mechanical viscous coupling system.

I would take the mechanical system over xDrive if I wanted a AWD car, otherwise I want a RWD car.

Yea, xDrive is fine on roads and highways, but take it to gravel and you'll see a locking diff/viscous coupling system is going to work better.

Anyways AWD in a BMW to me is just an exercise in selling to a market they never really sold to as well as to sell to snow states in the US.

Genesis is a fine RWD car, it's not really performance oriented. One thing I noticed, if I drive it like my WRX I can't help but chirp the tires on most of my 90 degree turns.

No I'm talking about how nobody has recognized that BMW, has managed (after many many years of failing to) to put an "on & off" switch xDrive functionality into more powerful BMW cars like the 550i, 750i & 750Li, maybe even the 760 as well.

Not too long ago, it was unheard of, even for BMW themselves, now with bi-turbo engines on top of Double VANNOS & Multiport Sequential Fuel Injected Engines of theirs, along with GDI's, it's relatively insane to ponder as to how they ever pulled it off.

Rumors about the 2012 M5 with xDrive? Ridiculous.. but now possible.

You can't strive to be a better car without recognizing who's really on top in regards to certain aspects of performance. I understand and agree with regards to "Genesis ESC RWD", but guess what..

The genny isn't the only RWD Sedan with a V8 and alleged "sophisticated" traction control nanny.

I remember feeling it for the firs time testing the 4.6 when the Genesis first launched, just braking at traffic lights I could feel the ESC kicking in on the anti-lock braking, that's just sad. Literally, just a low speed deceleration to stop at a red light, I got the same feeling in the break pedal under my foot that you got when xDrive was saving you from tragedy in a winter Chicago Blizzard.

You guys think because of my user name, and clear BMW liking, that I enjoy "bashing" dare I say.. the genesis. Please put that notion to rest, hell I've been designing my own since the car launched, one of which (designs) was already USED in the R-Spec launch.

I'll be posting later on, believe it or not, this forum can help save a couple if not more of some students careers and dreams, there's a Fund Raiser initiative in Chicago between a couple of colleges (Art Institute and Columbia), that are trying to get some students back into their schools after having to drop out for medical reasons. The student who started this, just received some devastating news earlier this month..

But more on that later.. just wanted to get the vagueness of it out there, 11PM on a friday night. Jeez, LOL.

I really dislike being rude to people, but the only thing that comes to my mind after reading what you write is.... WTF!? I wonder if you are trolling or just weird (ie. unique).

Back on topic, I used my Genesis the entire Chicago winter (actually north of Chicago where there are less snow trucks to clear the roads), and I absolutely loved the way it performed. I am sure there are worse and better cars out there, but there were no complaints from me even on days when there was ice on the road.

Funny, cause that's exactly where I'm located, but instead of focusing on a persons alleged character over "keyboard message boards", you should focus more on the content of the post instead of the personal impression you get, because it's very inaccurate and often offensive. Though to the point of the discussion, worse and better cars, isn't that kind of a tiny summary of my post? You know, same thing just shorter?

Was I just pinged for the sake of your posting? Check my router logs..
Yes, I am unique is many ways..

If only I could script/write code half as well as I could draw and build things in 3D, I'd be a billionaire
Though is this experience you reference to from the 2012 Gen? R-Spec? What kind of vehicle..? Which one I should say?

I live in Chicago also and anxiously awaiting my first winter driving with my 2011 4.6. My previous STS RWD was horrible until I swapped to Conti DWS. Have you swapped tires? If so which tires gave you satisfactory performance in Chicago driving?

Thank you,

Put this troll on your ignore list - it does wonders for your blood pressure. Since I put him and Cheeztroll on my ignore list the forum experience has been much less stressful.
