  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2012 sedan with the 4.6L. I usually only fill the fuel tank up to around 3/4 but a month or so ago I wasn't paying close enough attention and accidentally let the tank fill all the way up (the prices at this station were MUCH lower than the stations I normally go to). Now that I did that, every time I refuel, the car severely struggles to start. Once I get her going, she starts up perfectly and immediately every single time until I refuel again. It is throwing an EVAP code so I suspect the EVAP purge valve might be malfunctioning or perhaps the charcoal canister has been fouled? I did a search with no luck, so I was just wondering if anyone on the forums has had this issue before I start throwing parts at it or pay someone to plug in an OBD computer, thanks!

Hard start after fueling is a classic symptom of a failed purge valve. Typical CEL code will be P0441 for incorrect purge flow. Easy to get to on the 4.6: top of engine driver's side next to the valve cover. Pair of pliers for the hoses/clamps and a single 10mm hex bolt. To confirm the failure, remove the purge valve and suck or blow air through it. If you can suck or blow any air through it at all, it's bad. Save the rubber bits to use on the replacement.

If you had filled up the charcoal vent can with fuel (which *can* happen if you over-fill it), then the symptom you would have is a hard time getting gas into the tank on future fill-ups, like it only takes fuel at maybe 1/5th the normal fill rate, handle clicks off repeatedly, etc. A plugged charcoal can won't usually cause a hard start.

Awesome! I do not have any issues with the pump shutting off while filling up so probably the purge valve then. Thanks a lot for your insight and the diagram! Ill order a purge valve and replace that and see if it works. Much appreciated.
