If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. With all the threads about transmission issues and other electrical issues are you guys considering extended warranties for your car?

I have a 2012 3.8 with Tech that I purchased as a second owner and do not have any other warranties. The car has only 48,000 miles and I don't have any issues so far but am also concerned if it will be the case as its already about 7 years old.

I shopped around and am getting about $2400 for 4/48 warranty. I am not sure if this is through Hyundai or 3rd party so if you guys have a specific quote or idea on pricing please let me know.

Years/Miles - Price - Warranty Type - Dealer
4/48 - $2500 - HPP Platinum - Jim Elis Hyundai
4/48 - $3450 - HPP Platinum - Hampton Hyundai
5/60 - $3520 - HPP Platinum - Hampton Hyundai
4/60 - $2,499 - Allstate Premier Care - Irwin Hyundai
5/60 - $2,692 - Allstate Premier Care - Irwin Hyundai
5/75 - $2,999 - Allstate Premier Care - Irwin Hyundai

I have yet to buy one knowing that my trans is going to fail and they will probably deny coverage on it lol

I bought a warranty from Easy Care when I purchased my used 2011 4.6, it cost around $2000. Car had around 76,000 when purchased, warranty good until 127,000 miles. Transmission went out at around 98,000 miles. I paid $100 deductible to have it replaced. Just the fluid alone was almost $800, but the warranty picked up the tab for everything. Easy care does not have good reviews online, but i had no issues with them, the dealer handled all the communication with them. I would recommend a warranty, it may cost upfront, but can be worth it in the end if you have problems. I only purchased one extended warranty in my lifetime before this one, and i never used it, but knowing the cost of parts for the Genesis, I personally believe it is a good idea.

Just noticed one of your warranty quotes was from Hampton Hyundai. Hampton Hyundai is the dealership that replaced the transmission for me. Not sure if it the same Hampton Hyundai, located in Ft Walton FL...They have a great service department.

Yes worth every penny, IMO. Everything on these cars is expensive to repair.

Mine was $3800 for 10/120 with the car at 59,901 miles but cost me $2700 net after credit from a trade-up on my old HPP warranty on my prior 2009. HPP Platinum $0 deductible good until May 2022 or 120k miles. I "paid off" a majority of this when the HECU failed 3 months after the original 5/60 warranty expired in 2017. $2477 bill cost me zero.

In January, 2018 I bought a 2018 Genesis 3.8 with the Tech package, the car had 35k miles. I also bought a 4/48 extended warranty from my local Hyundai dealer, the policy was underwritten by Zurich America. Thanks to this forum, I read many posts about the transmission issues of this car.

Unfortunately soon after, I noticed rough shifting, so I took it in for service and the dealer replaced some of the solenoids in the transmission. This didn’t do a thing to solve the problem. I brought it back and the dealer replaced the tranny with a rebuilt unit, the cost was $3400 but the warranty picked it up and the dealer covered the $100 deductible. They also gave me a loaner car for about a week, a new Sonata Hybrid. The warranty cost about $2k, so I’m pretty pleased so far.

Here is an update on my $2000 4/48 extended warranty for my 2012 3.8 with tech package. I bought the car in January 2018 with 36,000 miles. After 6 months of ownership I was having shifting problems, sometimes it would slam into the next gear, other times it would have to Rev higher before upshifting. Dealer replaced the transmission with a rebuilt.

About 3 months ago, the drivers seat would not go back so the dealer replaced the track under warranty. I was also having shifting problems again between 2&3 and 4&5; sort of felt as if it was jumping into the next gear, not smooth at all. When braking for a light or a stop sign, I could feel the transmission downshifting; a first time for any car I’ve owned. Dealer said they updated the software.

The updated software didn’t do much of anything. Around three weeks ago driving along I felt as if I was rear ended, but if fact the tranny slammed into 5th gear and the dreaded “wrench” symbol appeared. I tried shifting gears in Manual mode but it would not leave 5th gear. I continued to drive it about 60 miles to my destination and the next day, the car shifted as before. I made an appointment with another dealer as I lost faith in the one in West Chester, PA that goes by the name of a former Mets Catcher. The very next day I experienced a 5th gear slam once again with the wrench symbol.

Dealer #2 diagnosed the problem and said it was something with a solenoid in the 5th gear and since they don’t work on transmissions, the solution would be another rebuilt unit. They called Zurich America and they approved the repair. Tomorrow I hope to pick up my car and have some semblance of normalcy.

So for $2k in premium, I will have received two transmissions worth about $7000, plus a drivers seat track worth another $1700.

I drove a couple old 1998 Volvo S70’s and a 2005 S60, all used cars, so I’m no stranger to head scratching repairs. But in all my years of car ownership or driving company cars for work, about 20 or so cars, I’ve never had to replace two transmissions within three years and around 30k miles. This includes GM products, a Fiat, a Plymouth Voyager (it was slipping when I traded that one).

I have had other minor issues like the trunk popping open mysteriously which drained the battery due to the light being on (at least 5 times), intermittent problems with the master control switch (or whatever it’s called) that prevents me from accessing the radio or map. I guess part of my frustration is with the dealership I used for service since they sold me the extended warranty (Bought the car from a Volvo dealer outside of Philly; nobody’s buying a Korean built rear wheel drive car in January at a suburban Volvo dealership). Wish me luck at dealer #2.

I would love to trade this in, but cars are so darn expensive now, maybe I’ll wait a year or so. After all, I have about 6 months and about 7000 miles left on my warranty. Rant over.
