  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Finally picked up my first Genny today: 2009 4.6 and its awesome. Not as new or awesome as the rest of you who have the newer editions, but its good enough for me.

Reading the owners manual now (like every other Genny Geek) and man, I've had college textbooks smaller than this.

Awww... its not that bad... the '09's are holding their value and still a looker in my book.

Congrats on the new ride and welcome to the family.:grouphug:

Which dealership did you get your Genny at?

Couldn't find one in the Twin Cities?

Another Genesis owner in MN...congrats!

Did you get snow tires as part of the deal? You will NOT want to drive this car in the snow with the OEM Dunlops. I'd also be careful with a replacement all-season tire unless it's noted for handling snow well, particularly if you're unfamiliar with RWD in the winter (reviews on tirerack.com can be very helpful).

Have fun!

I'll second the comment about not driving the OEM Dunlops in the snow. I tried it last year on plowed roads with a snow covering and the car is simply uncontrollable. I switched to a set of Bridgestone Serenities All season. Made a big difference. Still not a 'snow car' however. Just use your head.

Having lived in Minnesota all my life and RWD drive cars is all we had in the 60's and 70s, I don't have too much problem with driving in the snow with RWD. On the Genesis you have to remember to take off the ESC when driving on snow or ice, as it will remove power from the rear wheels and you'll get nowhere.

And using the pseudo manual helps too. Start in 2nd from a stop, slide over to drive once moving well. Use it for downshifts too to avoid slides when stopping.
Above all, do not overdrive this car... Or any car.

Yes, it has not the original dunlops, but replacement dunlops from the dealer...so I'm assuming they are the same thing. I've been looking for a decent snow tire for MN winters. I too grew up with rear wheel drive cars so I'm comfortable (relatively) with them. From what I've read, the tires make all the difference.

I've called Tirerack.com to check on snow tire replacements, but I'm not sure which would be best. I do mostly highway driving, but I know that I'll appreciate having them when I need them. Any suggestions?

Lots of folks here, myself included, like Bridgestone Blizzaks. I have them on all four corners and have had zero problems driving in snow/slush (granted, I'm in Maryland, not Minnesota, but we still get a couple of significant storms most winters).

I can second DG Moore's endorsement of Bridgestone Blizzaks. I've run them on three different cars over the past twelve years (two BMWs & one Gen...soon to be two) and they inspire a lot of confidence in both snowy and icy conditions.

I should point out that I downsize my winter tires (I'm running 17" Blizzaks versus my 18" summer Michelins), as the lesser diameter improves traction (although you'd have to ask a physicist why that is...I'm merely following the advice of a friend that's both a motorhead and a PhD physicist). But that implies a second set of wheels, which you may or may not want to invest in. I like having my summer and winter tires on dedicated wheels, as it's simpler to swap 'em out (and avoids stressing the tires via bi-annual remounting).

What did the tirerack rep tell you? You can also glean a lot of info by reading the on-line reviews on their website. While I'm an avowed Blizzak man, there are a lot of legitimate options out there. But I'd recommend that you act soon. Snow could come any time and you DON'T want to be out there on the Dunlops.

+3 on the Blizzaks... just installed them on my Wife's Genesis.
These rubber compounds on today's [new] winter tire need a little road time to get the better traction.
Breaking-in new winter tires found here: http://www.tirerack.com/winter/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=117

Here in Pa we have been slammed in the recent few years.
Prefer to be safer and pay for better rubber/traction than too cheap to care.
Don't need a) accidents, b) insurance increases and body work, or c) hospital bills... not cool.

I'm a newbie here, looking and lurking before I buy (first post). I currently drive an AWD XC90 and a Passat with traction control that performs well on snow-pack. How does the Genny's traction control system work in snow conditions? Haven't driven a RWD in years, but also grew up driving in Wis.
Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful! Musher, your comment is very true but still makes me sad. You'd figure that I'd be used to how quick winter comes in MN by now.

I have been looking for some 17s for my winter tires. Tirerack told me that I'd be better off with 17s because they are a little more narrow, which helps in the snow. All in, they say $1,260 for wheels (Blizzak WS70), tires and TPMS, installation and balancing. I'm a big value guy so I'm trying to see if I can piece it together for less. Not looking that promising right now.

Do you Blizzak fans do the WS70 or the performance Blizzak tire?

I have LM-60's - http://www.genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/album.php?albumid=381. Total cost of wheels/tires/installation/balancing was about $1200

Winter makes you sad, UDrummer? Well then, you just need to find a reason to embrace the season! I recommend getting pulled through the north woods by a team of dogs, but that's just me. ;)

I have three-year-old WS60s (I imagine WS70 is a refresh/upgrade since '08). I've run the LM series on previous BMWs, but given how often I find myself on unplowed roads (typical for areas where sled dog races occur), I've decided to foresake what one gets from the blended performance/traction capability of the LMs and go for the max traction afforded by the WS series. That said, I'd recommend looking through old threads on this site, as well as tirerack.com write-ups and reviews, to decide what makes sense for you.

Wow, everyone's quoting pretty low package costs for tires, wheels and TPMS. I can only surmise that y'all are buying pretty cheap steel wheels for the winter. I wish I could be content with that, but the way I look at it, my winter wheels are on for pretty much half the year, and I'm not willing to put up with "ugly" wheels for six straight months. So I ended up spending $1000 to get 17" alloy wheels that look as good (to me) as the stock wheels that came with the car. It is a non-trivial chunk of change, but as long as I keep driving Genesis' (two down...who knows how many to go?), I can amortize the higher wheel costs over a number of years.

Congrats with your purchase. I also bought my first genny platinum R-Spec sedan today using the Hyundai Circle pricing and Motozuma plus $1500 competitive rebate for a price of $40,499 plus tax and tags at Manfredi Hyundai in Staten Island, NY. Does anyone know where to get wing wheel caps for this car. If so, please advise.
