  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First Gen sedan OEM Wheel Paint?

I do recall seeing a thread last year where someone did their G2 5.0 stock rims in a flat black or super-dark gray. They looked pretty cool if you were going for that look, but I am unsure if it was paint, powder or dip. I will see if I can find it.

Re: First Genesis Sedan OEM Wheel Paint?

I recall at least one person who posted that they damaged the paint on their rims, and took them to a repair shop to have them repainted. You can probably find some shops locally that do it with google.

Re: First Genesis Sedan OEM Wheel Paint?

My wheel paint is coming off. Who knew the wheels are painted? not me. I contacted regional after the dealer said to bad. According to the regional person, the paint is only warrantied for 36 months. I guess that is both wheels and body. How about that! I have two other cars with alloy wheels from the factory, a 1990 GM and 1991 Toyota. No problems with them.

Some alloy wheels are painted, and some are not. This can lead to a problem when people use special alloy wheel cleaner chemicals to clean their wheels, which is too harsh for a painted surface.

The painted alloy wheels should just be washed and waxed, and they will last a long time (assuming one does not hit a curb, etc and scrape the paint off).

Re: First Genesis Sedan OEM Wheel Paint?

Yes Mark, I stopped using wheel cleaner before I got the Genesis as it really didn't work well on my other cars and it just seemed to not be a good thing anyway. Car was two years old when I got it, so don't know what the previous owner used. Took four years for the paint to come off after I owned it. One wheel is still good. I believe it is a manufacturing process problem from the supplier that Hyundai uses. My car simply got three bad wheels. Although I'm not the only one with that problem. Seems like any car in this category should have higher quality materials. Well, any car for that matter. If your going to paint then use quality products/process. Interesting that the warranty is only three years on paint. They must have known something.

I am not claiming that Hyundai did a great job on painting the wheels on your Genesis model (18" 4.6 V8 wheels), and others have experienced the same peeling of paint on the wheels (you can search the forum to find other threads about this).

The 3 year warranty on the paint is not just for the wheels, but includes the body panels, and I assume is industry standard for brands that compete with Hyundai. Paint can be subjected to road hazards such as flying gravel or rocks, curbs, or harsh chemicals, etc that the manufacturer has no control over.

Even if you did not use harsh chemicals on the wheels, I have noticed that many car washes, and even dealers, do use them. Fortunately, I waxed my wheels when new, and once a year since then, and the paint on my 8 year old Genesis wheels is completely intact (but they are the 17" wheels, different from yours).

I have the same issue with the paint coming off the wheels on my 2011 3.8 Genesis sedan. Does anyone know what color I need to get to repaint them?

i used plasti dip on my wheels. As long as you get the peeling parts off the wheel you're good to go.

If you can find a cheap place, I would recommend powder coating and then add a clear coat IF that is what you really want. It will last longer.
My buddy in Columbia SC (Vivid Powder Coating) does an AMAZZZZZING JOB. 1 man show too!
