  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I decided to run a few tests - not perfect, but an idea on how air temperatures can change when removing the air flap/cover at the bottom of the main air intake.
today the weather was right at 85 degrees outside for a few hours so I drove an exact same loop and ending at the exact same spot with some coasting up to that spot - of stop and go, idle, city street speed and some 60mph. Came out to 16 minute trips (same streets/turns exactly) average speed 24mph according to the car.

I put a digital thermometer at the bottom of the intake and cleared the memory after each trip. AC on the same each trip

1) no flap thermometer location when looking down from above, bottom right side next to where the door would be.
Max temp 109.2
Temp reading when I opened the intake to get the thermometer 102.9
2) flap ON - same as above location
Max temp 110.8
temp reading when opened 109.5

Now I moved the thermometer to right in front of where the flap opens on the side of the intake bottom toward the car if looking down at it.
1) no flap
Max temp 99.0
temp when opened 97.1
2) flap ON
Max temp 102.7
temp when opened 100.7

Considering I left the original post without much final thought...my idea here is removing that flap in the intake does not introduce higher temp air. As some have speculated. More so, a smoother and larger volume of air is available with an overall lower temp through real driving conditions.

I know there has been a very long post on this "flap" but I havent seen anyone track any temperature changes inside the air intake housing.

Interesting and somewhat fun info at least to me!
