I decided to run a few tests - not perfect, but an idea on how air temperatures can change when removing the air flap/cover at the bottom of the main air intake.
today the weather was right at 85 degrees outside for a few hours so I drove an exact same loop and ending at the exact same spot with some coasting up to that spot - of stop and go, idle, city street speed and some 60mph. Came out to 16 minute trips (same streets/turns exactly) average speed 24mph according to the car.
I put a digital thermometer at the bottom of the intake and cleared the memory after each trip. AC on the same each trip
1) no flap thermometer location when looking down from above, bottom right side next to where the door would be.
Max temp 109.2
Temp reading when I opened the intake to get the thermometer 102.9
2) flap ON - same as above location
Max temp 110.8
temp reading when opened 109.5
Now I moved the thermometer to right in front of where the flap opens on the side of the intake bottom toward the car if looking down at it.
1) no flap
Max temp 99.0
temp when opened 97.1
2) flap ON
Max temp 102.7
temp when opened 100.7
