  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Fuel spillage during fill-up?

I had read on the Genesis section that some Genny owners were having issues with fuel spilling out when the pump handle shuts off during a fill-up. It seems to be related to an issue with the vent line being pinched or twisted, which makes perfect sense.

This has happened to me both times I've fueled up the new 2011 Equus. It's been the same station both times, but different pumps. I'm going to try a different station next time to see if it happens there, too.

Anyone else have this issue on an Equus? My search specific to this section of the boards turned up nothing.

Otherwise, I'm loving this car.

Not that I've seen here. Only fueling issue is a balky door that wouldn't open even after numerous presses of the button. There's a TSB for that, mine took 2 repairs before it was fixed.

One tip though from previous cars:
Try fueling at the slowest (first notch on the pump) speed. Takes a minute or two longer, but decreases the risk of the overfill. And of course, never top off.
Good luck.

I've seen the posts about the fuel door and (knock wood) no issues on that with mine so far. I will say, I was a little surprised and somewhat disappointed to find out the fuel door was plastic at the first fill up. I guess it doesn't matter too much, but just seemed strange.

On the 2nd fill up, I did try going much slower, but same spillage results. When the fuel gets high enough in the tank, it eventually needs to "burp" out the air and it's sending fuel back up the filler spout in the process. At least that's my hypothesis.

No splashback, or burping here, but it seems that the tank is not filling completely. I never go past "one ringy dingy" at the pump.

Brought it in for service. They told me there was an obstruction in the vent line filter. The tech said it looked like a spider had gotten in there and built a nest while the car sat on the lot. They topped it off to test it, so I have to take their word for now.

Turns out they did not fill up the tank to test it. I filled it up yesterday and fuel spilled out as usual. Service Mgr said they spoke to Hyundai about it and they're going to replace the whole filler neck because Hyundai told them something inside it has to be defective and they don't want to chance anything given the safety and environmental concerns.

I am having a similar problem ... but different. I tend to fill up at Costco (for obvious reasons ... lower per gallon by about 20 cents plus a 4% rebate at year end). Costco stations have a clip to hold the dispensing lever handle in place during fueling ... so you don't have to hold it. Many other retailers have removed this clip (as a "safety feature"). I found the clip kept jumping out, stopping the dispensing of fuel. Even by holding the lever handle manually, the auto shutdown kept tripping, forcing me to reset, as though there were an air lock. The clip would stay in place only by using the lowest setting, which would take a very long time to fill up (and cause evil looks from those in line behind me). I didn't have any leakage or blowback spillage. Finally, I pulled the dispenser nozzle out slightly, allowing some breathing room between the rubber gasket and the filler neck - and that seemed to work best. This is not the best solution, because the rubber gasket is supposed to reduce air pollution during the fueling process. When I was finished, the gauge needle was slightly above full.

I've had several vehicles over the years do that at certain stations or certain pumps. Have you tried it at another station to see if it's isolated to Costco?

My local dealer ended up replacing my whole filler neck. It took a while because the part was on back order, but I've since filled it up 3-4 times at different stations and it's working fine now. I've even go so far as topping it off to where I know the level is pretty close to the opening and I won't get more than a couple of drops at that point.

Very bad idea to top it off like you do. Risks damaging emissions devices and shutting down your car. Never run the gas pump after it shuts off the first time.

Completely anecdotal of course but I've filled every car I've owned over 30 years with the "3 stop fill up" method and never damaged a single car.

Yeah, I know about good luck. I worked in NYC for 30 years and was only robbed once.

Very bad idea to smoke while fueling too, but you see it all too often. You also see people returning to the comfort of their cars while fueling and then risking static ignition of gas vapors when their clothes cause a spark as they exit the car.

It's back...

Last 3 fill-ups, I have fuel burping out after the handle pops. It's not from topping off, either, as it happens right away when the handle pops. I've tried pumping slowly and it doesn't make any difference. Like I stated in my original post, it's as if the air has to burp itself out and it's pushing fuel back up and out.

The worst part about it is the rancid smell of fuel that lingers afterward. If I fuel up on the way home, my garage smells terribly well into the next day.

The car otherwise continues to deliver as promised. 12,000 happy miles.

Is that considered "good" in NYC? Yikes!

I only have trouble every time I fill up. No matter what you do it won't fill up on even the first notch on the autofill. You have to hold it up or pull back the rubber. This is at every station I have gone to since I bought the car.

I know this is an old thread but I wanted to add that I have this same issue.
I took car to the dealer and they Diag that the charcoal canister and the valve associate with the charcoal canister needed (and were replaced).
~$600 later and still having the issue. :P
Now it's time to revisit the dealer for answers.

:mad::frown:

I have had 4 Equus cars and none have had this issue. I always put pump on auto fill and at fastest rate. Is you car parked on level ground. That is only thing I can think of.
