If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey everyone. Can someone tell me if its worth my while to use the high octance gasoline rather than the regular octane in my 2.0T. I heard that the V6 model runs much better on high octance but the first two tanks of gas I have put in my 2.0T have been regular unleaded.

I can't comment on the fuel requirements of the turbo motor other than follow the octane recommendation in the owner's manual.

My experience with the V-6 has been that there is no noticable performance difference between regular gas and premium. If I recall, the horsepower difference between reg/premium in the V-6 is 306/310 - not very big. Since the manual only specifies 87 octane, I'm saving my money.

Thanks Goose. Thats what I thought. The Manual says 87 or higher. I read though in an article on this site that the horsepower difference for the 2.0T goes from 216 to 227 with premium gas. I just also thought it was better for your engine to run it. Im just trying to find way to maximize the performance. Im not very mechanically inclined. I would like to learn how to do mods, but for now whatever I can do Ill do

If the ecu is programmed to increase boost/advance timing upon seeing 93octane as opposed to 87, then it is better to use 93 octane.

higher octane gas is more resistant to pre-ignition/detonation and capable of making more power.

I would personally use 93octane on my TURBO(emphasis) motor to give myself a good safety margin on top of already rich tune from the factory. It's only a 3-4 dollar difference after a fill-up.

I agree that premium gas could provide an extra "safety margin" with a boosted engine. If you're not very concerned about the extra money, there's absolutely nothing wrong with putting premium gas into your car. The 11HP gain would most likely be more noticeable, unlike the smaller difference in the V-6.

My impression, based on the manual's recommendation, is that even the turbo engine was designed from the start for 87 octane. If this octane recommendation is based on engineering and not marketing (selling lower fuel costs) and the engine is not retarding from ideal timing, I commend Hyundai for this move. It seems like every new engine is requiring premium gas these days!

Here's my Q about gas; I've been told that here in NY State there is a law that says premium gas MUST have a higher detergent content than the lower grades so I ran premium, and nothing but, for a long time. Now they tell me that if your car can run on regular all premium does is foul up the system with unburned fuel. What's the deal? Also, Hyundai says they don't recommend the use of fuel additives. I bet they all say that. I've always put in a bottle of Chevron/Techron injector cleaner twice a year, although my Coupe is too new yet. Good or no good with this car?

It's been so long that I forgot about this thread! :)

I don't think there's any downside to using premium fuel other than the added expense. As long as you're buying from a reputable source, I doubt that any brand of premium gasoline will hurt your car's engine/fuel system. If you're at all unsure, avoid getting gas at a "no-name" station; the actual gasoline might come from the same distributor as the name brand, but you never know...

In my opinion, I would heed Hyundai's advice and not use any additives. There are lots of uninformed opinions out there (says yet another unknown internet source) about additives. Although I doubt a mass-market additive will hurt your engine/fuel system, you never know. Most "cleaners" are nothing more than solvents - solvents that can attack various parts of your car.

Hope this helps.

I never gas up at no-names and buy Mobil whenever possible. As for the cleaners I've heard from good sources that the Chevron brand is the only one that does what it claims to do. I've been using it for years, never had a fuel problem. I have noticed something odd, however, and it's that I get better mileage (hwy) with regular than with premium. Regular gets me 28 mpg @75mph while a tank with mostly premium only yields 24 at best. Anyone else have the same experience?

There is no noticeable mileage benefit to using premium over regular fuel assuming there is not a difference in additives including ethanol.

As to safety margin, unless you are racing, drag any format not a quick run on the street, there is probably no benefit to using premium if regular is recommended by the manufacturer.

Hey, guys, I got a thread Fuel Guzzler goin on, but I just read BTOROCCO saying, with his 3.8 he gets 28 mpg... I've been to the dealer several times, coz I only do highway (sawgrass express, in South Florida), and I can't get more than 21 or so... When I first took it after 2 mths of owning, they said it'd get better with time, and at that time it was 19-20. So it has gotten better, but nothing like your 28; and they do announce it as 30mpg hwy... so, what can be wrong with mine? what do I need to tell them to look for? they say the computer shows no codes, so all is working per design... except, of course, the mileage...

Any ideas/suggestions, pretty please??? I'm dying here with gas costs... it's a 30% higher than hoped for and promised, 20% higher than expected. I drive like 60 mi per day, plus 500 mi every 2 wkends trip to Ocala, so there is a difference per month, you know?

HEEEELLLPPP ~!!!
