  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type

Every station in my little city has crossed over to no name gases.
I know these are supposed to be the same product as the brand names, but what about the additives? Are these generics less pure (contain more molecules that should not be there?)
Want to keep my 3.3T as long as possible, -200k mi? Should I drive to a name brand. One person said BP is the best, another said Chevron

I would not put "generic" non name brand gas in any car I own. I've seen several mysterious little gas stations around town that just show gas price and no labels on their gas pumps etc. I do not buy from them. Over the years I've read local stories where people use the gas and it turned out the store was cutting the gas with water and peoples cars were ruined.

Find a name brand station for sure. And to confirm, there is no "best" name brand gas. As long as they are legit stations, their gas is fine. One thing to search for though, is "Top Tier" stations since they gas has better additives in most cases.

I'd not worry about less pure. Additives is what matters. There are tank farms with generic gas that all brands draw from the difference is the additive package. Ask the BP and Chevron fan why they think it is better and it will be opinion, not facts. If they are "Top Tier" they will be good for your car.

The off brand generics may be the same but we don't know for sure. If you use them, put some Techron in your tank.

The owners manual accounts for this. If you don’t have access to top tier, put a bottle of chevron in it occasionally

I like how a buddy always thinks this or that, but 99% of the time it's just an opinion with no facts to support it. Use top tier gas in any fuel injection vehicle is my "opinion" and you will always smile as those who say all gas is the same discuss the problems with plugged fuel filters, misfiring injectors and failed pumps. I worked in that industry and the additives are the main deal, but inline filtering at loading docks and properly maintained storage farms are very important as well. I equate this equally to folks who buy 87 octane because it is cheaper when they are driving a $50K + car. You get what you pay for.

Thanks

Just have to ask this- some people say Valero gas is as good as anything . Opinions?

I will have to fill up out of town as much as possible but about half of my fills may be brand X, so I guess I should use an additive. Any recommendations for the best of just go with techron. How often?
Thanks

Valero is listed as a Top Tier so yes, it is as good as any and has good additives.
If you fill with a lesser, just follow the instructions on the Techron bottle.

All gas must meet some government specs as a minimum, this the additive difference for better brands. The generics may or may not have them. They all have different marketing from a Tiger in your Tank to V Power.

Next up, is store brand milk as good as Sealtest?

Don't see where "top tier" is any great distinction

here is a list of just some of them; are you saying that most/all of them as as good as Chevron/Phillips 76?

Any Top Tier gas meets some minimum requirements for additives. All gas is refined to meet a federal standard no matter who does the refining.

Virtually every brand of gas comes out of the same tank at the tank farm. Only additives may differ from one grand to another. The biggest difference from one brand of top tier and another brand of top tier is MARKETING.

My choice is based on convenience and price. In 55 years of driving I could never tell one brand from another.

See that tanker dropping fuel at the Chevron station? When he is done he will go back to the depot and fill up again from the same tank and deliver to the Shell station down the street. He may even use the same additive package. Buy from the one that is 5 cents less.

Talked to my buddy and he agrees with you.
