  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've been lurking here a bit and ready about pet peeves and any major issues with the Gennie.
It seems that the suspension may be an issue to some, but not to all. My question to those who have an issue with it; how much of a test ride did you take prior to purchasing it, and how long in to ownership did it take for the ride to bother you? In other words, should I ask to take a significantly longer test ride than I normally do with new car purchases, or will that not tell the whole story?
2nd noticeable issue is with the leather seat bottoms. For those who have had issue, were they replaced under warranty (and if so) did this correct the problem or give you a band aid?

Thanks,

Jeff

Welcome to the forums. I have a V8 tech and have no issue with the suspension. I actually took my car for 24 hours before purchase, so I could get real feel for the car. In terms of the seat bottoms I have had no problems at all.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
I also have a V8/tech and am totally in love with this car!!!
Test drove the V8 demo they had and loved the ride.
I've had my car for 5 1/2 months now and already have over 12,000 miles on it.

I do have pet peeves too but who doesn't?
My pet peeve is that dam ESC doesn't turn off completely!!!

Regards,

1. Stiff suspension SUCKS. Mostly the rear suspension. Does ride a very little better when I have people loaded in the rear seat, but even then, I have to warn them about the rough ride. Before you buy, take the exact car you are buying for a long ride before you sign.

2. What issue with the leather seat bottoms? I only heard of one person that was not happy with his leather seat bottom. This is a non issue.

2000+ miles on mine since July and LOVE it. Great power when I need to squeeze out from traffic, Excellent devices like back-up camera and sensors. Awesome speakers have given me a brand new appreciation for classical music on XM.

Ride, to me is fine, but I suppose that may be because I came out of a Civic. The leather seats are beautiful, the dashboard and it's layout is elegant.

Good luck with your decision! Let us know!

Welcome, Jeff. Do take a good test drive in the specific vehicle you're looking to buy before you go through with your purchase. Make sure you're comfortable with the suspension. Some love it, some don't. It really seems to be a personal preference...

Suspension in the 2010 model will be slightly modified (tuned) to address these concerns.

I came from a 2002 Explorer, so I don't notice anything wrong with the suspension. All of the bells and whistles that are included with the one I got (3.8 Tech) are phenomenal. The V6 has plenty of power. I got the car on 7/31 and just got my first oil change today. I'm loving this car, good luck with your decision.

I sold my 4.6/Tech a few weeks ago after 8 months of ownership because of the stiff suspension. My twenty-minute test drive prior to purchase was on relatively well maintained road surfaces. It told me that the suspension was firm, but I was unaware of how jarring the suspension could be over poorly maintained roads. Hated to give the car up because in all other respects it was perfect as far as I was concerned. At 65, I'm older than most Genesis owners and more interested in ride comfort than canyon carving, so I bought a Lexus ES350 to tied me over until the Equus hits our shores. I had the opportunity to drive an Equus with its adjustable suspension in July and will probably buy one next year if it stickers in the neighborhood of $50 to $55K. If it comes in at $60K or more, I'll shop for a Lexus LS. Click on this link for my driving impressions of the Equus...

OK, so I've owned my 3.6 Genesis base model for a year now, driven almost 27K miles in that time. I found the ride of the Genesis a little stiff even when I test drove but thought it was probably a trade-off for the sportiness of the drive and didn't find it too bad coming from a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup.

My first real major issue with the suspension wasn't noticed until around mile 6000 or so, on a trip from SC to LA. When passing through AL I hit a stretch of I-20 that caused the car to heave back of forth so bad I though I had blown a tire at 70+MPH. I've found this spot, and a few others since then, that cause the Genesis to behave this way. These interstates were always concrete segments, with a "drop" when crossing expansion joints.

That bucking problem is my only real complaint, and fortunately 99.9% of the roads I travel don't cause it, but it's disturbing. I still find the suspension a little stiff the rest of the time, especially at slow speeds going over things like speed bumps or small curbs on driveways. I'll probably shop for something with a slightly softer ride the next time around, but I'll live with the Genesis for 100K miles or more so I don't think it's a killer flaw or anything.

My family purchased bilmat's Genesis from him.

We consider the suspension a bit stiff, certainly (especially passenger(s) in the back seat), but in our short time with the car so far, our opinion of it is much nearer to ttsig's than bilmat's.

In short: I definitely understand why some have issues with the suspension. It could be much, much softer and forgiving on certain uneven surfaces. That said, unless you're looking for a Lexus/Buick ride, the Genesis should be in the running. Depending what they're comparing it to, many surely find it to be a pleasant ride, if not a fair compromise between sportiness and luxuriousness.

For Hyundai's sake, I hope they can find a way to economically take the edge off the harshness while retaining the slick handling in future model years of the Genesis. Because aside from this significant point, most people find nary a quibble against this car.

They did with the retuned suspension on the 2010 models. Revised the shock and spring rates. Also revised the bushings (not sure if that is for steering or for suspension).

All of the Genny's are stiff. For whatever reason some of the vehicles (no one knows how many) cleary exhibit an inferior, extreme, or subpar ride that is unacceptable. Other Genny's seems to be good or acceptable (the difference between good and acceptable is where the preference and the roads in your area come in).

In short - drive the exact vehicle you will purchase for an extended period of time on EVERY type of road you can find in your area.

Enough already! We know that some owners sold their Genesis because of the unacceptable suspension (to them). We do not need to hear it over and over.

Could someone please move this thread to the suspension forum? I think nearly all of us have had enough of the gripes about the "suspension" issue(s).

You may ignore the threads, or put the posters you don't like on ignore.

The gentleman who initiated this thread made the statement in his posting, "It seems that the suspension may be an issue to some, but not to all. My question to those who have an issue with it; how much of a test ride did you take prior to purchasing it, and how long in to ownership did it take for the ride to bother you?"

It's conceivable, even likely, that he was unaware that a few owners sold their cars because they found the suspension too stiff. The more information he is armed with before he signs the papers and drives away in a Genesis will make him a smarter buyer.

Speaking for myself only, I wish I had taken a significantly longer test drive and purposely sought out some less than ideal road surfaces before I bought mine. So to answer his question, I say, "Take as long a test drive as the dealer will allow and try to find a variation of road surfaces."

Seems to me that his question was perfectly reasonable given what's been posted on this forum, and that the responses to his question have been just as reasonable. Learning as much as possible about something that is going to cost in the neighborhood of 40 large is one of the primary purposes of a forum such as this, even if the subject matter may tend to grate on some members.

Exactly correct. I wrote another thread about the comparison rides between two 4.6's and a 3.8. There were differeces between all three, but none good enough for me to purchase...but that's my opinion. The 07 camry I rode to the dealer in had such a better ride, it made the Gennie look bad. I may try the 2010 model but the 09 is out of the question for me.

SterlingDave,
Buddy how u doing? Hope all is well...it's unfortunate that this place is falling apart...I am disgusted at the way this place has gone downhill.

This place was really enjoyable with extremely friendly people trying to help each other out. When a thread was started with questions/concerns, people would answer/help the best they can.

Get ready to hear more about this suspension crap all over again.

Hope you're enjoying your GREAT car!

Kind regards,

About 3 to 4 miles, with the salesman in the backseat suggesting the route, as he was reviewing features.

We went on a trip 3 weeks after the purchase, within 4 hours I knew there was a problem, but thought it would be corrected when we returned.

Recommendation: Find a road with 3 or 4 miles of bad repeating seam joints. If that is not a problem, buy. (check tire pressure) You will probably experience additional small problems. If your purchase is with a good dealer, the comments on this forum indicate the issues will be resolved. If your purchase is from mine, good luck.
