  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Spoke to a local exhaust shop in SoCal and he is ordering up a couple different Magnaflow mufflers to see how it sounds tomorrow. I can't wait for the catback anymore, so I will try it this way. I am just going to do the mufflers at first and see how it goes. The resonator and the secondary cats may come off at a later point, but I am a little worried about droning at cruising speeds. I will try and get some video and post it up when I get back.

Looking forward to the video;) I have a feeling the R Spec with sound the same as the 4.6 with MagnaFlow's, which is a good thing.

I can't wait for your results. I am very interested in a more robust exhaust note, but not at the cost of any drone. As my daily driver, I need great sound without interior drone.

Working a deal with 'motorsportauthority' to do dyno B4 & after bypass pipes. Not much sound difference without changing mufflers, but will help sound some.....hopefully HP even more. :)

I got the mufflers put on today. He was able to keep a completely stock look. He actually took the little black tips off the stock mufflers and put them on the magnaflows. He spray painted the bottom of the mufflers black, so you can't see them at all. The Magnaflows probably weigh less than half of what the stock mufflers weigh. The stock mufflers look like a 5 gallon gas can.

The mufflers are quiet at idle inside the car with a nice rumble outside. They sound really good under full acceleration. They are even quiet enough for me at freeway speeds. The problem always comes back to the transmission in this car. You get extreme drone if you are lightly accelerating or going up a hill under load. If you are in 8th gear going 40 miles and hour and press the gas it is almost unbelievable how loud it is. It's that point where you have to almost floor it to get the damn thing to downshift. Once it downshifts you're good, but up until that point it sounds like you got 4 15's in the trunk at full blast. Maybe the TSB for the transmission will help? If not I will be doing a lot more manual shifting.

I am not sure about them yet because of the obnoxious drone, but overall this car sounds like a beast with just mufflers. Resonators and both sets of cats were left alone. I will try and get some video this weekend.

Folks,
For what it's worth, and obviously just my opinion. If you remove the secondary cats and the resonator at the front and rear flanges and install straight pipes replacing both using new flanges and joining the old ones, you'll have a cost effective way of making a descent sound, zero drone, not too loud. Some bending will have to be done, also obviously welding, and a balance pipe is a necessity but you'll get a nice mid tone sound. If one can find a Porsche Cayenne S (V8) that car sounds a lot like what I managed to put together. Also, you'll eliminate the secondary cats, no wires to them, and perhaps get a little power boost. You'll also have to install a few spacers, washers, in the removable cross beam where the stock pipe is flattened due to the round new installed pipe. My shop simply hacked off the old resonator and installed new pipe. I'd recommend that new plumbing be installed from flange to flange so the entire system can be easily reinstalled if necessary.....warranty?!?!

I just looked at the pictures from the above link. There are supports from the stock plumbing to the car. Obviously they may be difficult to reproduce and may make my idea more costly. Thus the cat deletes and the cutting may be the way to go?

Above is the link to the video. It is pretty poor quality, but if you have good speakers ot hook it up to your home enertainment system it will likely sound better. They cost me $325.00 installed and took about an hour to put them on. I will try to get some fly by and interior driving videos today. This one took about a half an hour to upload to youtube, so it may be a couple days.

I heard the deep rumble and gurgle. I bet fly bys will sound great! Sorry about the drone and appreciate your detailed information.

I posted this in another part of this forum. It explains what I did and, by the way, the drone completely disappeared!

For those of you who like the old (1960’s) muscle car “throaty” sound I have a suggestion for you. What I did, per my previous post, was have the stock mufflers of my 2012 R-Spec 5.0 removed and replaced with Magnaflow mufflers - it sounded quite a bit quieter than my 2010 Genesis 4.6 with the Magnaflow catback system installed. So, I went back to my local custom exhaust shop and had him remove the resonator and that did it! Perfect! Throaty but not overbearing at all!
Bottom line is, in my opinion, you don’t have to buy the full catback system (if it ever becomes available for the 5.0) – just replace the OEM mufflers with Magnaflows and remove the resonator. It is awesome if you like to hear those 429 ponies!

question: when you removed the resonator, did you replace with an x-pipe or just straight through? And do I understand correctly that: no resonator plus magnaflow mufflers = NO drone?? Thanks!

There's a video posted on YouTube of a guy who removed the resonator and put the MagnaFlow mufflers on

It doesn't sound too good
But the dude didn't remove the secondary cats either.....
and THAT might be the difference

So far however - every shop I have gone to - so far - has advised against removing the resonator.

But if it works for you - and you enjoy the sound - all is well :)

Any sound clips or videos?
