  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone - just bought my new Genesis a couple of weeks ago. Loving it so far. I've owned both the XG350L and the Azera Limited - but the Genesis blows both of them out of the water.

I am curious though as to whether anyone has heard about map updates for the GPS system. There are numerous roads that are incorrect on it (I live in the Cincinnati, OH) - and while it does eventualy get me there - it's not always with the best roads. This isn't a settings issue - the roads don't show up on the map at all!

Time marches on . . . I had a XG350L which I loved . . . but the Sonata LTD (2009) now blows that out of the water! Yes, we have one, but I also have a Genesis V8 due anytime (soon?).

The Sonatata 2009 is more car than the XG, and the Genesis is a clear step up from that! Hyundai really seems to have their act together . . . even if they can't predict hurricanes in the Gulf, strikes, etc!

Welcome aboard, WPrince! I'm moving this topic into the Navigation forum...

Hi there! To answer your question.. the GPS data is from a company called NAVTEQ. They tend to contact local agencies and their respective GIS departments throughout the year, to create map updates for customers 1-2 per year.

Unfortuanately, the system in the Genesis is very new. And it will take some time. Furthermore, most people are more accustomed to purchasing a CDROM or DVDROM and removing the old one, hereby, using the newly purchased as an update. The Genesis navigation is powered by a hard drive, and will have to be updated by a Hyundai technician, at a dealership.

Additionally, because it is, again, so new, exact pricing on this process, is by-and-large unavailable. By the end of the year, at the letest, I would personally expect to see this.

(hard drive based navigation systems, also allow for faster updates, and should be less expensive, as well).

My old Infinti Q45 had a hard drive Nav system and the upgrade was about $300. On my new Genesis, I opted not to get the Nav package and instead bought a Mellegan GPS for $80 at Radio Shack that I have placed in the upper left corner of the windshield. It is out of the way and you really only use these things when you are going somewhere you need directions for.

thanks for that lovely quote of 300$ on your infiniti.

Notice above, when I was writing about upgrading the map data on the nav system, I used the word " should " . meaning, it potentially, theoretically might, and could cost as much as your average map dvd from navteq (last I checked they were 200 +/- (ish)). Or it could be less.

I don't work for hyundai, or the department that sets MSRP on the service costs. Nor do I work for a dealership that sets labor costs.

It was a generalized statement, in hopes to give the original poster a wide answer of his original question of : can it be updated?

On the NAVTEQ website they don't even list Hyundai as a manufacturer (yet?) I wonder if updates to our nav system would be accomplished by disc or if they could be loaded from a USB drive?

I also have to wonder if it would theoretically be possible to upgrade other aspects of the system using either method.

Like if there is any potiential method to change, say, the look of the menu system, or the colors, or the information displayed... Heck if you could get access to the raw inputs of the LCD display itself you could output whatever you wanted. You could hook up a PS3 to it, anything.

Aside from the first thing I'd change, being able to watch DVDs while in drive, what if we could use the display to show any arbitrary information about the car's fuel consumption, ignition timing, intake air temp, manifold pressure, fuel pressure (all available OBD2 data)... or anything else.

The next generation of these systems will definitely allow for push/pull data access of things like weather, gas prices, news, etc... that will be very cool!

the USB port in the arm rest is connected to the entire DIS system, and with the right developer software, you can make many changes....

Including menu customisation, colors, etc..

Satellite data over the air, will be a while before we get that. As that's a LOT of data to move.

And it's possible that it wasn't NAVTEQ that did the data for the Genesis. I'm sure they got their map data from NAVTEQ (most do, kinda the defacto GIS data peeps) , but coulda been LG, or Harman, that provides the updates.

Time will tell. I'll try to call around and ask.

Aside from the first thing I'd change, being able to watch DVDs while in drive.....

ME TOO! Even a half-step, so for audio DVDs you could see the main menu while driving so you could change from one DVD to another, and then be able to see/select tracks. No different than entering NAV data.

Ask your state legislature for guidance on that :P hehe.

the dvd firmware in the car would have to distinguish between what VIDEO_TS files it is and ISN'T allowed to access. One "slip of the finger" during the filenameing process (hehe, if u get my point) and BAM, suddenly you'll be able to watch dvds in motion.

edit: mr baywayric: also, I've noticed, you can change chapters, like you would a normal track for a regular audio cd... using the buttons on the steering wheel " << & >> " .. most audio dvds have corresponded their chapter numbers, even some live performances, with the chapter listing on the jewel casings or dvd cases so you know what's where :) Not that I advocate reading a dvd case while you're driving. But if you listen to it often enough, you might know, that chapter 12 is your favourite song :) hehe.

Finally, someone who agrees that whatever restrictions may be in place in this car, they are software/firmware controlled. "Fixing" them is a mere flashing a chip or a minor code change. The guy who tinted my windows was convinced [having never seen a Genesis before] that there was a "2nd wire" he could disconnect and you could see DVDs.

I found the track up/down with the wheel control, but the real pain is changing DVDs. You have to remember the order from top to bottom, hold the "back" button to ensure top menu positioning, then roll the knob one click at a time depending on which item in the list you want. If it's plain vanilla and the DVD just starts, perfect. However, with the Eagles DVD, there is an interim prompt after you select it for DTS or 5.1, then you get to the tracks.:(

:) Of course. Esp in the new systems, it's all firmware software controlled, With complete submersion into drive control, it's not a physical mechanism that knows you're in drive. It's software :) And keeps you from watching movies.

Baywayric: how familiar are you with copying dvds? I may be stepping on the toes of some DMCA laws here, but, I'm quite sure I'm staying within some guidelines. If you're copying for your own use, it's legal. There are ways, of making a copy, and just removing the 5.1 tracks, renaming them, (similiar to CD TEXT), so when you put the DVD in the genesis, it only has the audio tracks, already in the 5.1 codec, with no menus to fiddle with. And when you <FF> or <RR> on the steering wheel button. You get a track name on the navi screen :)

Doing things that way, also keeps the original dvds, with the video in your house ;) In case they get stolen, or damaged... you have less to replace.

I did that with my Blue Man Group How 2 Be a Mega Star Version 2.0 and Madonna, concert DVDs. Ripped the audio tracks off. Renamed them. And they're still DVDs. They're NOT, however DVD-A. They are DVD Videos. I just did some editing in the program I burned them in. Takes a few extra minutes.

If you do a search for the DVDs that unlock the ability to watch while you drive you will find tons of them on ebay for Lexus, Infiniti, and a few other manufacturers... wonder how long until Hyundai gets hacked.

Excellent idea!! I do my copies with DVD decrypter to strip out "certain files", but usually use the ISO option to just copy/burn an image. To do what you suggest I think I would use the "files" option, pick out the tracks, and re-burn. Definitely going to try this. :)

The hmaservice site posted a new TSB for an update to the DIS system...
DIS NAVIGATION SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATE
(SERVICE CAMPAIGN T63)
It says it should be applied whenever you bring your car in for maintenance or service. So I guess everybody gets the map/software updates.

I put this up as a TSB HERE

The good news: IT'S FREE:)

EnjoyingSilence: I'll bet you will be the first to try the weird button push combo to get to the software maintenance screen. Please report back. ;)

Thanks for this! I'm way off needing a service (only racked up 600 miles so far), but I'll make sure my dealer does this when I do need a service.

It's just like updating the firmware in my Sony Bluray player... :)
