  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've owned my 2015 Genesis 3.8 for just over a year. Love the car, but tranny is bad. Would you rebuild it, get a used one or get one from the dealership or get rid of it? Currently has 132,000 miles.

Bad is a rather loose description. Sloppy shifting? Does not work at all? Slipping?

Dealer is usually the most expensive option.

I'd talk to a local independent tranny shop about it. I'd guess used my be cheapest, but, it is used. Bit of a crap shoot.

I've had two experiences. Went to one well know chain shop with a car that was not shifting properly. Wanted to get an estimate so they took the car in, dropped pan, gave me a high price and some pressure to get it done. Told them "no" and they put it back together. Drove out and never had another problem.

Another car was slipping. Local shop gave me a reasonable price, had it done and it worked well until I finally sold the car.

I'd check the price of the local guy and decide from there. Car has little value if you do nothing and a fix is cheaper than a new car. How is everything else? If good, worth keeping it going.

Welcome aboard! And thank you for signing up. I moved this discussion into the second generation Genesis Sedan forum.

Depends. If the car is paid for; then I would have the transmission rebuilt.

If you are still making payments and the car runs "good enough" then I would trade it. I would not waste time with a used one ; unless it is low mileage transmission(less than 80k miles).

If the car is paid for and you have the budget to buy a new OEM transmission; that would be the best way to go if the old one is having serious drive-ability issues.

Has the fluid & filter pan ever been changed? My 2015 5.0 (102k mi) started to shift strangely and sometimes give harsh downshifts - I thought the trans was on the way out. About 2k miles ago, I had my mechanic do a drain & refill and replace the filter (it's built in to the pan) - the difference was like night and day. Not saying that will fix yours, but it worked for me. From what I've observed & read, these transmissions are really intolerant of dirty & degraded fluid. The notion of "Lifetime" fluid is total BS...

Might be worth a shot, I'm glad it only cost me $300 bucks. But whatever you do, don't let anyone flush it, with those miles it'll do more harm than good - drain & refill only. I got lucky, my mechanic didn't see any metal in my fluid or pan, so it's probably fine for now. Although, I'll likely get another drain & fill done in a few months to get rid of most of any old fluid remaining.
