  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
1G Genesis Sedan (2009-2014)
Hey all,

I am car shopping at the moment. I like to get a used Hyundai genesis sedan, preferably a 4.6, there is one on auto trade with high mileage 98k, should I be concern? there is also a lower mileage V6 which cost slightly more.

I have 93k on my 2011 4.6. Great car low maintenance. That said the one with 98k on it may be due for some expensive service. Check to find out if its had transmission service done which should be done by dealer(700.00), new spark plugs are due(100.00 plus labor)cabin air filter(20,00), fuel filter(100.00), fuel tank air filter (40.00) driveshaft inspections, rear end oil change(50.00), Air filter, oil/filter change (60.00), wipers? Brakes may be needed soon and they are ceramic.

$700 for a fluid change? I'd be going elsewhere for that one. That's a complete rip off.

700 for auto transmission oil change wow...thats a rip off man, just had a guy did it on my old 02 for 100 bucks plus coolant flush and regular oil change.

Why should the trans service be done by the dealer? It has been my experience that quality independent garages have training and access to the same procedures and parts that the dealer's shop does.

alright guys so

it comes down to a

08 CTS V6 AWD 16k (64k miles) vs 09 Genesis Sedan 17.2k V8 RWD (98k)

I like both cars and having a tough time deciding, the car will be driven in hawaii for a good 3 years, the road will be bad or so I have heard and the gas will be expensive 4.20-4.50 while I know this is a Hyundai Genesis forum, I would just like to know you guys input.

I would just keep in mind that you are going to be in a remote location, so I would investigate the availability of replacement parts and factor that into the decision. Beyond that it really comes down to how well the cars have been maintained. Make sure to get the service history before making a decision.

There are three Hyundai dealers on Oahu, one on Maui, and one on Kauai. There are none on the Big Island. So, like nearly everything else on any of these three amazing places, it will cost more and take longer (especially the Big Island, with no dealers).

The transmission service is for a complete flush and removal from the car. It is a sealed unit and hard to flush. Just the way it is. Same for the Hyundai which says never to service it.

I dont imagine i will take my car to a stealership for any service...I dont know if there is a Cadillac dealer on Honolulu but I'm sure any GM shop is fine.

Transmission is not sealed. There is a drain, fill, and sight hole.

Many indie shops cannot service Mercedes or ZF sealed transmissions (which the 4.6 has) . And the synthetic fluid cost 35 to 75 dollars per quart and has to be pumped in and heated. There is no dip stick hole and the transmission should then be checked with dealer's computer. That's why 700.00.

The key is NOT taking it to the dealer but the ability to buy genuine parts. If something fails (maybe a power window switch or something more serious) you will have to wait to get the part, or your repair shop to get it. Depending on if any dealer has the part, it could really delay getting the repair done. You are looking at cars that are 5 years old and possibly 100k miles, so you should expect some maintenance and repair.

If roads are bad then I would go with the Cadillac.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
The caddy has AWD and is a softer ride. The Genesis is great on the 4 lanes and good roads in mountains, not good on pot hole back roads and bad city streets.

No offense, but IMHO you should be shopping a lower mileage car, Camry, Accord, or something else better suited to "bad roads". If you're headed to the big island, the only "bad roads" are those less traveled. Gas is very expensive, so my suggestion is a small SUV, possibly a AWD or 4X4?

Trust me from a 2009 owner, don't get the Genny if you're planning on driving mainly on "bad roads" unless you like relentless body movement.
Long smooth highways and mountain roads are another matter altogether, that's were it's strength lies.

My thoughts exactly. Doens't sound like they should be looking in the luxury market.

I was looking at a forester, but I feel like I drove a civic long enough to give my back some incentive...living in MD for 3 years traveling 60 miles a day for work on road that is at best decent is taxing on the body. Gas on the forester is almost the same as the CTS and the Genesis V8 the difference is maybe 50-100 bucks difference. I cant stand driving any other Small SUV so please dont mention it (Ford escape, rav4, crv blah blah blah)

sound like the member on here are telling me to get a CTS since it is awd and softer than the genesis.
