  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

In scanning the appearance topics I've read a couple of terms I don't know. What is I think it was Xytol and what does "clay" mean. I guess it had to do with detailing, but I'm not familiar. Also, any advice about conditioning or other care for the wonderful leather in the 4.6 Tech. What brands to use, how often, etc.? Finally, anyone know any good pin stripers in the NYC/LI area?

Clay refers to a clay bar used by fanatics :D to remove all residual debris from the paint.

Xylol "...is a superior solvent for cleaning and degreasing metal tools and parts"

I would not use any of those products on a new car. A clay bar is somewhat abbrasive, and while it does a good job on cleaning and restoring an older or damaged finish, it is usually not necessary for a new car unless you have some dirt that cannot be removed some other way.

If you wax your car, do not use any kind of polishing compound or rubbing compound. Those are also designed for older finishes and remove the top layer of paint or clearcoat. For new cars, the spray-on waxes work well and are very convenient to put on. "Turtle Wax 1-Step Wax & Dry" and "Eagle One Wax as You Dry" were top-rated by consumer reports. Other more traditional liquid and paste wax products last a little longer, but are more work to apply and buff off.

If you want a more lasting wax, or need to remove some more serious dirt or paint swirls, both companies (and others) make suitable products. Check out their websites. Just stay away from a rubbing compound or polishing compound paste unless your paint job is oxidized (which takes years to happen).

Fantastic Dataguy, Mark and Nabbers. I have what I need - that's why this thing is so great. Think I'll pick up Lexol conditioner for now and a new microfiber sponge. I'll get Turtle One Step or the Eagle product.
