  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

im trying to decide whether to get the...
passport 8500 x50
beltronics v8

i know beltronics owns passport but i like my friends 8500 even thought its a bit more expensive. also i dont think the v8 has 360 coverage.
let me know if you have had any experience with either one or which you would prefer.

Used the 8500 years ago, and I loved it.
It detects the radar from literally a mile away.

Lot of people prefer the Valentine 1 because of the arrows, but I haven't had a chance to own one.

I have an older (15 yrs !!) Beltronics detector which really needs to be retired and go get something more modern. I've been looking around at possible replacements and from what I have read and heard I would offer the following:
- The Beltronics & Escort models are both very good and have lots of features and gimmicks that I would probably never use.
- The Valentine-1 appears to be the detector of choice if your sole concern is avoiding speeding tickets.

I have the Passport 8500 x50 and the range is outstanding. It has saved my neck many times on the drive home. That being said, my brother has a V1 and he is absolutely amazed by the performance. I bought my 8500 on Ebay for about $250.

Valentine +1

I have the 8500 also, no complaints. I rarely use it though.

i didnt include the valentine because....
it picks up alot of false signals such as best buy, etc
the arrows are mostly useless because radar bounces off almost anything so the direction its telling you its coming from isnt always correct
its a bit above my price range

After 6 years with mine never had any of the problems you mentioned. I drive by a Best Buy almost daily.

Arrows I find to be critically important. Remember side arrows just alert you to radar in area. Police car must be in front or behind to get a reading. Arrows tell me if they are in ticketing position.

I have both the Beltronic and Valentine 1.
The Valentine is hardwired in my Genesis and I feel is better in comparison.
1- the arrows.
2-360 degree of protection.
In my last trip, I stopped counting how many times I was saved....

I also agree that it has more false reading then the Beltronic. But I rather be safe than sorry.

I have the 9500ix and LOVE it. The GPS allows it to "learn" false signals like automatic doors when you drive the same routes. It has an outstanding range as well.

I am about to pick up a 2nd detector for my wife's vehicle and was going to purchase another 9500, but now I am torn because Passport's Redline model is interesting as well. No GPS on that model (same price as the 9500), but two antennas and extremely long range.

If you are looking to research models, I recommend the following website:

Several head-to-head comparisons and more info than you could ever absorb on radar detectors..

I have a Valentine. It is expensive but it is worth it. The features are awesome.

I have a Valentine 1 that has been in my last 5 or 6 cars and must be 14 years old. The Escort with GPS might be a plus but the arrows and bogey counter are more valuable to me. My first detector was a Super Snooper, then a Fuzz Buster, anyone remember those two ?. Next was one of the early Escorts, the big one. Then one of the newer small Escorts. All good in their time but none lasted like the V1.

I have a Valentine 1 ...but in nyc I don't use it much ...in fact I took it out of my car because I am in parking lots all the time and think that they will steal it .
IT JUST SITS HOME , and I will use it one day when I take a long road trip, but not soon !
NOT SURE HOW IT WORKS ALWAYS GOING OFF .. HA,HA,HA the unit is always telling me something but not sure what????? I did send it to valentine and they upgraded it for $150.00 but now it goes off all the time , in nyc !!!!!

I don't see myself spending $400+ on a radar detector.

I was looking for a replacement for my loyal 50 bucks Cobra that has been my companion for the last 8 years inside multiple cars when I came across this thread.
After some research, I settled for another Cobra... The XRS-9550G which comes with GPS and lifetime updates for speed/red light camera locations.
