  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I have a 2014 hyundai genesis 3.8. Was running perfectly fine. Started it up and the ESC light was solid yesterday. Drove it to work and the gauges were going on and off as I drove. Still drove and shifted fine. Engine light came on. Pulled into auto zone to get it scanned as I pulled up I could see in the reflection that my headlights were going on and off with the gauges even though they were in the off position not auto. Plugged in The scanner failed to communicate. I unplugged the battery let it sit and restarted it. This did not clear the warning lights only the check engine light. It started fine however the power steering was gone i had to muscle the wheel as I was backing it up. After I left autozone i got to around 20mph power steering was back and it was back to "normal" minus the dash being lit up like a Christmas tree and the gauges going on and off (speedo temp gauge and tachometer dropping to 0) What do you guys think it could be? I drove it straight to the dealership it'll be a month before they look at it.

When you say you disconnected the battery, Did you disconnect it in the trunk or at the connection in the engine bay? Seems like you are having a battery or grounding issue to me. Are you in a corrosion prone area? You probably have electric assist power steering and your electrical issue is causing it to cut out intermittently.

You have a major electrical power supply issue. Could be a rotted ground wire or the fuse block housing on top of the battery, loose alternator wire, etc., etc. A month is not reasonable. Find the best automotive electrician in your area (almost certainly not the Hyundai dealer) and pay them $200 or so for a diagnosis. They may or may not discount some of that fee if they also do the repair.

I would tend to agree with @Gunkk , and if you drive it too much longer in this condition, you may run the risk of frying various control modules (computers), if nothing has happened to them already. That sounds like a lot of extreme high-to-low-to-high voltage shocks (no pun intended).

Agreed it is unacceptable I already have it there and will update this thread once they diagnose it

A very good chance that u have ground problem... The instrument cluster ground could be one of the possibility but I would also look at the grounds for the headlights...Many times the grounds are clustered together. Sometimes corrosion, sometimes just loose bolts can cause something like this. It should be fairly easy to find...
I had these problems a few times on different brands...(retired mechanic of 40 years)

I'm going to examine the abs sensors for breaks or faults, replace brake light, and crank position sensor, before paying for an ecu.

Update: dealer (wolfchase genesis of memphis) had my car for almost 3 months. I checked in every Friday to see what they had checked. Went in person to inquire about what diagnostics had been done and found evidence that quite literally the only reason they assumed it was the ecu was because they could not read it via the obd port and no diagnostics were completed outside of simply plugging the reader in. I called the last week of August and asked about the status of the $3000 ecu they ordered and they informed me it was on indefinite backorder with no eta. I picked the car up upon hearing this unloaded it at my house. As I turned into my driveway, hard left, the gauges flickered and the warning lights went away. I pulled up and turned the wheel hard each way and could once every 3-5 rotation cause some flickering. I pulled it up on Ramps got under it and could hear the power steering pump priming on and off I followed the noise and noticed a loose plug. Plugged it up. Lights on dash are gone. Ac and power steering work again, all gauges have life. Have been driving it for 2 days now without further Incident. I will update this thread again once I receive a response from hyundai as to why they do such a poor job diagnosing vehicles.
