  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi , my fan wasn't coming on when the car had been running and my coolant needed to be replaced. I bought

So I took it to a guy who ended up denting the vehicle, driving it 30 miles, leaving it filthy inside and ruining a perfectly good floor mat. I bought a temp sensor and thermostat and coolant and he said he'd do it all for $150.

He ended up charging me 150 to change the coolant I bought and open up the housing, only to not install the thermostat and lie about it. I found the new thermostat in the box and he siliconed around the housing, but now it's leaking from there. I went to PEP boys. They charged me 50 $ to tell me to take it to the dealer. I ended up getting a refund later.

Then the dealer told me it needs a new radiator and hoses and fluid flush plus a couple thousand in other repairs ( some of which were completely bogus)

I told them I'd just pick it up and when I did it had a recommended service for just two radiator hoses. They claimed those were needing to be replaced not necessarily the 1000$ radiator I had been texting with the service advisor back and forth for 3 days..

So I finally got a good flashlight and I can see it's not the hoses or radiator. Those look fine. But there's definitely coolant leaking from that plastic thermostat housing which I fear will need to be replaced as well.

And the coolant temp gauge never reads more than 3/8 under any condition than when it's cold for the first 2 or 3 minutes it's warming up.

I wouldnt stress it, but I'm not seeing a lot of availablity of these parts either and I need to be able to use the car. It's leaking way too much now. I'm taking lyft to work. This is starting to get expensive.

Replacing the housing gasket is important. RTV ain't gonna cut it, as you now know all to well.

From the repair manual, steps to fix a t-stat housing leak, in this order:
1. re-torque bolts (12.3-14.5 ft-lbs).
2. replace gasket.
3. replace tstat housing assembly.

you think I'm gonna need to source the t stat housing?

Any ideas where? I'm not seeing it at the usual places I would look...

The repair manual thinks it. I haven't seen the car. You likely only need the whole housing if steps #1 and #2 don't work. The presumption and progressive diagnosis/repair of a water pump leak around the housing is a) bolts are loose, b) gasket is worn, c) housing has failed. A competent mechanic will know all this and/or have access to a repair manual and be able to figure it out. General rule of thumb on an old car is you always replace a gasket when you break a seal.
Of course this "internet diagnosis" is based solely on what you posted. This supplier at the links below may have the parts in stock for you, but you are almost always better off letting a good mechanic do the diagnosis and order the parts.

Free advice is worth every cent.

All the places I called about replacing the thermostat said the thermostat and housing are sold together, but the labor was about 2 or 3 hours. Anyway, I went ahead and ordered the housing from ebay. 40 dollars delivered.
