My name is Jack. I retired from the space industry, and have always had an affinity for well made machines, from fishing reels to firearms to cars.

Currently own a 2011 328i which is the best handling sedan I have ever driven, but owning it carries a lot of baggage. I want to replace it.
Have owned MB's for over 35 years ( a couple I kept 10+ years) and never had any problems, but Hundai has really closed the gap with the German offerings and is now a strong candidate as I replace the B'mer.

Looking at the 2012 Genesis sedan, trying to weigh the benefits of each option starting with the engine. To me this is the fun part of deciding which car to buy. The search, investigate, analyze phase!

Keep in mind that the Genesis is a much larger car than the BMW 3 series and just not going to be as nimble. Genesis is even larger than MB E class. But the Genesis V6 is definitely more nimble than the V8 (which has 200 extra lbs on the front end for the Tau engine). V6 is closer to ideal 50-50 weight distribution than the V8. Those who are into muscle cars with straight line speed, have more of an appreciation for the Genesis V8, but more sophisticated drivers prefer the V6 (I have now put on my flame retardant suit).

Just remember the V8 owners have two more cylinders than your V6 so they would definately catch you depsite your sophisticated driving efforts. And your little dog toto too! (Although we may run outta gas before you do)

what do you mean by the 328i carrying a lot of baggage?
i've owned a prior generation 325i with the 2.5 L I-6.
it was very reliable and came with free maintenance.
in what way are you unhappy with your 328?

I have both and both have their attributes. The 328i is fun to drive but I would never take it on a long trip over the Genesis. Until I got rid of the runflat tires, the BMW rode like it had concrete wheels. The BMW has had a rear end, transmission and radiator change along with several electronic sensors replaced, all under 40,00 miles but handled under the superb BMW warranty and service but time consuming and annoying non the less. The Genesis has only needed oil changes. My 4.6 Genesis gets slightly better highway fuel economy than the 328i but slightly less in town. I spent a day at the BMW performance driving school and drove several models. The M3 on the long track is an experience that you will never get in the Genesis but the Genesis from Atlanta to Los Angeles would only be comfortable in the Genesis over the BMW. In the end it is just what floats your boat. Since the BMW is my wifes and she loves it I don't have to deal with it on a daily basis. I can tell you this however, it would not be my first choice for daily driver.

Set's start wit the tires. Loud, VERY EXPENSIVE and rough riding for an upscale car. The interior is a cut below comparable cars. The driver - computer interface is a pain. The cup holders are cheezy. The BMW dealer in town is arrogant and you have to tell him more than once if something other than routine maintenance is required. (Three visits and an extra tire purchased before they admitted their precious rim leaked air.) No spare!

I never had one problem with any of the MBs I have owned since the mid 70's, so comparison is primarily to MB quality and service. Two of the Mercedes I had owned over 10 years each.

No doubt, driving the BMW is great as long as it is running OK. The engine is smooth and has good power in the small car. It handles as well as any car I have ever owned. But I do not want to be the owner once this car is out of warrantee.

I also have owned both MB S and a BMW 7 and now the Genesis. The Genny is not a MB or BMW but comes a lot closer than the difference in price with a whole lot less dealer drama and recurring visits.

i don't think many people can argue with that statement.

Boy, can I relate to THAT statement! Having driven two BMWs for ten years prior to buying my first Genesis in '08, I truly understand this sentiment. When all is well, there's nothing like a BMW for the sheer thrill of driving. But the list of things that CAN go wrong are seemingly endless, particularly when the warranty has lapsed. I spent over $2K in an attempt to get my '02 530i to stop burning oil and it actually got worse. That's when Genesis hit my radar and I bought one of the first ones to arrive in the US. I was so desperate to get rid of the BMW that I couldn't wait for the V8s to arrive (although I've remedied that with the recent purchase of an '11 V8).

While the attributes of the two cars are quite different, I don't think you'll be disappointed if you buy an Genesis, Scruffy...particularly not from a value standpoint.
