  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone tried using one of the homemade recipes using baby oil, castor oil, lemon oil, etc.?

It seems like you could just whip up a batch in an old plastic 2.5 pound coffee or mixed nut container and keep the lid on it between applications with a cheap paintbrush.

Why bother? There are so many good ones out there at stores and they aren't that pricey.

I am all for saving a buck or two when possible, but I draw the line at homemade tire shine.

However, that would deserve points for creativity.

Good point, but now what do I do with that $30 bottle of extra virgin olive oil I bought for the tires?

After you find a homemade tire shine recipe, try baking soda as a toothpaste alternative. It actually does double duty. If you swallow it instead of expectorating it makes a great substitute for Maalox.

will home made tire shine make you go blind like home made moon shine?

The Lithium Trim Serum will last months and doesn't attract dust. It also won't sling off like the tire shine does. A little bit goes a very long way too. Their leather conditioner is also a really good product.

Although tire shine isn't expensive, I like the idea of using a home recipe that I not too toxic to the environment, e.g., shine made with olive oil.

Meh. I rather have something that protects the tire from UV rays on top of good look. I don't spill the spray down the sewer, it goes on the tire.

Oh and just driving your car is toxic to the environment thanks to your exhaust. :)

The thread question was "anyone tried one of the homemade recipes", not whether home made versus OTS is better. It's a free country in the U.S. so far (other than CA ;)) and your choice on what you choose to do/use within reasonable limits. Personally, I use/prefer the highly toxic, cancer causing, hair loss and impotence inducing industrial strength stuff (CGs-TIRE+TRIM GEL PLASTIC AND RUBBER HIGH-GLOSS RESTORER AND PROTECTANT)

I was surprised to see lemon oil as one of the ingredients. Lemon is relatively acidic which I would think would be detrimental to tires/rubber, but I see several online references to it's use.

I do use a home brew window cleaning solution. (1 part water : 1 part Isopropyl alcohol : 1 part vinegar by volume) with newspaper print instead of a micro-fiber/cloth/paper towel. This works better than any commercial/OTS product which can be harsh on the vehicles rubber, plastic and paint (ammonia in particular).

Olive oil? Do you likewise clean your tires with vinegar?

You’re thinking of the fruit inside being acidic, lemon oil is not acidic. By nature of what oils are they are basic.

Good point. I considered this after posting above. Lemon OIL comes from the lemon rind/skin not the juice. The oil is pH neutral (not acidic or basic/alkaline).

Put lemon oil on your tires and lemon juice on your fish/shrimp. :)

Mayonnaise works well... the flies tend to be a problem with the windows down though :)

Maybe if the olive oil gets warm enough you can pull over to sauté some veggies on the side of the road?

Stop it, you’re making me hungry for Italian food! Maybe a little Pirelli antipasti.🤤

Maybe castor oil is a good alternative to lemon or olive oil? A fly who remembers his childhood would prolly steer clear of castor oil :)
