2 Kids Die, Baby Critical After Being Thrown From Van
Mom Says She Fell Asleep While Driving
BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Two children were killed and a baby is in critical condition Wednesday after a rollover crash on the Ohio Turnpike.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the crash happened at 2:30 a.m. on the turnpike west of Baumhart Road in Brownhelm Township in Lorain County.
Troopers said that the children had been ejected from a Kia minivan after it sideswiped a Chrysler PT Cruiser while traveling eastbound and flipped over.
Alexia Patrick, 10, died when she was thrown into the westbound lanes and struck by a tractor-trailer. Jamel El Amin, 5, was also killed when he landed in the eastbound lanes.
The mother, Setita Patrick, 29, of Detroit, who was driving the minivan, and 5-month-old Kevin Green Jr., who was ejected, were taken to MetroHealth Medical Center. The mother suffered minor injuries. Jerome Thomas, 37, of Detroit, a passenger in the minivan, was not hurt seriously. They were both treated and released.
The mother told officials that she fell asleep at the wheel. The children were not wearing seat belts.
"Anytime we lose children, or lose anybody, but with children it's a lot tougher. Not only on me, but on our officers who responded immediately to the scene," said Lt. John Maxey.
Traffic records from the state of Michigan showed page after page of infractions for Patrick, NewsChannel5 reported. It was also discovered that Patrick has no driver's lisence and may have never had one.
Troopers said that the family was heading from Michigan to visit grandparents in Pennsylvania. They were scheduled to meet on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
The driver of the PT Cruiser, Jose Arzuaga, 58, of Lorain, is expected to be OK.
Several lanes had been shut down, but have since reopened.
The Highway Patrol is still investigating how the crash happened.
