I've got 18,500 miles of moderate to slow driving. I religiously rotate every 3-4K and always keep tire pressures checked.
Recently Discount Tire told me "your inner shoulders on 3 of your tires have worn down to the second and third layers of rubber. These tires are unsafe to drive on and should be replaced."
They look to have another 10-12 k of wear left on them.
WTF?
