  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How do I stop the navigation system?

Today I ran into a strange situation with the NAV system.

I picked up my number plates from the dealership and since I don't know that part of town to well I started the NAV system with my home as the destination. Once I hit the freeway I suspended and thought that was it.

Well, it turned out that my wife took the car after I came home and it appears as if the NAV system resumes navigation for the suspended target when you turn the car off and on again.

First of all I do not like that behavior!

However, here is the more interesting question. How do I stop the damn thing? I don't just want to suspend and then have to suspend every time I restart the car, I want it to stop.

I have looked in the manual but this does not seem to be obvious.

Cheers

Thomas

Did you press that round knob?

It will ask you if you want to suspend...

That should do it.

Yes, it does suspend but not stop.

After you restart the car it comes back and you have to suspend it again. Not good....

hmmmm, that's funny... mine stops guidance and it doesn't reactivate when I turn off and restart the car.

Maybe the dealer can help you...

You must "Delete Destination" and confirm with a "Yes".

The route guidance will only delete the current programmed destination and not resume.

I see. This is hidden away in the waypoint menu under options.

This looks like a huge inconvenience. There needs to be a top level item to stop if there is a destination currently active.

This was a major annoyance for me as well. After using a few of the navigation systems in a variety of different manufacturer's vehicles, I long for the OS on my Garmin Nuvi. I am not sure why Garmin (or other entities in the business of Navigation Systems) doesnt license out their software to manufacturers, for the benefit of continuity and ease of use.

I discovered this oddity as well when I was first using the NAV. Now that I'm used to it, the delete function is not hard to find. However, they could have made it easier to end the destination route guidance. ;)

I guess it depends a lot on terminology. To me "Suspend" means just that. Suspend but do not cancel the guidance. I actually think it's appropriate that it would pick up navigation again if you restarted the car.

Sounds like what you really wanted to do is "Cancel" the guidance. So then the question is how easy/intuitive is it to cancel the guidance. Maybe there could be some improvement on where this is located. Also, to me, Cancel seems like a more intuitive word than Delete. Delete sounds more like something a technical person would call it since technically speaking it probably is more of a deleting action from a software developer's standpoint, but it's just not as intuitive from the end user's standpoint.

In our current vehicle, you can cancel the current destination by clicking a button on the screen to see the details of the current destination. On that screen is another button called "Cancel Guidance". Click that and it'll ask if you're sure and then cancel it if you click yes.

I tend to agree. I think the design idea was to be able to stop the car in mid trip, such as staying at an hotel, and then starting out the next day, without having to re-program your destination.

Perhaps "Cancel" could have been more intuitive . .

According to the DIS book, you can use the voice command "Stop Route Guidance" ... I haven't tried it myself. I know that if I say "Cancel Route Guidance", DIS repeats back "Suspend Route Guidance", so Cancel means Suspend in that instance.

I'll have to see if Stop does something different.

UPDATE: Stop = Cancel = Suspend. All three terms do the same thing.

Also, it seems that the DIS resumes automatically after returning to the car, but only if it's been within a certain time. I suspended route guidance the other day and I didn't return to the car for about 6 hours - it didn't resume. This time was within 15 minutes and it resumed. I wonder where the break is.

I guess once you get to the destination; "when the destination is completed" then the guidance no longer reactivate. - (Is this true?)

(so one way to eliminate the problem is keep it on until you get to the destination.)

I agree, it is a bit annoying to keep "suspend" the destination - should be easier way to "cancel" the destination with out Deleting the destination info.

I have a 2010 Genesis and cannot find a way to shut off the voice navigation. Driving me to distraction as it interrupts radio listening
I cannot find this reference noted above maybe it does not work on the older system.
Thanks
