If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi everyone. I have a really annoying rattle that seems to be coming from the air vent in the dashboard between the instrument cluster and navigation screen. If I put my finger (very little pressure) on the brushed metal trim above that vent, the rattle stops. I'd like to pull that vent out and add some felt or something else to stop this rattle but I can't figure out how this dash comes apart!

If anyone has any idea how to take it apart, please advise. I'm considering purchasing a factory service manual on CD but thought I'd check here first.

I'll probably just take it in for service but I have little faith that they will do anything about it. I've had terrible luck with having rattles serviced in any vehicles I've owned.

In addition, my rear deck and sunshade assembly both rattle when driving with the sunshade down. It also rattles with any respectable amount of bass regardless of whether the sunshade is up or down. I can't see an obvious fix other than removing the entire sunshade assembly. Any ideas on this one?

Thanks.

Brent

Go to hmaservice.com and sign up as a member. It'll email a user ID and password. Once there, an interactive factory service manual is available. It's been a while but I remember getting to it from one of the blue "bars" at the top of the page, the left-most one.

I'd rather find a PDF of the whole thing though; the interactive one is a bit of a slowpoke and sometimes is hard to read. I prefer looking at paper. Plus I'd be able to flip/browse it during TV commercials and what-not if I had a printout of the whole thing. Best way to learn the guts of a car.

This is the first post I have seen on that rattle. I have not had it addressed by the dealer yet because it is intermitent but has been there since purchase on 11/15/08.

I have the same issue. Of course when I take it to the dealer for service, its not doing it when I bring it in.

Interesting.. This appears to be an issue with the Genesis.. I'm sure some people don't report it and some don't hear it. It'll be interesting to see how this discussion grows...

While I'm sorry others are experiencing this problem, it's kind of nice to know that I'm not the only one. With the information provided by "Mikec" I have found a basic guide for disassembling the dash. I will give it a shot this weekend and see how it goes and report back to the group with my results. I can't help but believe this should be a somewhat simple fix. I'm sure hoping so as this is the kind of rattle that really drives me crazy!

Thanks everyone!

Just an update here. I was able to disassemble the dash and remove the facia that surrounds the LCD screen fairly easily. I looked for the source of the rattle but couldn't find anything obvious. So I added quite a bit of self-sticking felt to just about every point where there's contact with the underlying frame. I did notice several of the retaining clips were very loose and could potentially be rattling. Several of the clips actually fell out when I pulled the facia so i put them back in and covered them in felt and reassembled. Unfortunately, the problem was still there. So after several test drives I think I have located the problem. This time it appears to be the center channel speaker below the windshield. If I press lightly on the speaker grill, the rattle stops. So I'll be pulling the speaker next and see what luck I have there. I'll report back later.

In the meantime, for the rattling sunshade in the rear window, I just stuffed a washrag around the retracted shade on both sides. This took care of the rear deck rattles but is not an acceptable solution since I can no longer raise the shade. I think I'll just insist the dealer take care of this one. I read elsewhere that someone else had this problem and their dealer replaced the entire sunshade assembly. That took care of the rattles for that person.

When my folks bought an Azera about a year ago, during the final test drive I noticed a string hanging from the upper part of the sunshade. We pointed it out to the dealership... figuring they'd just have a mechanic snip it. Nope, they ordered a totally new unit and swapped the whole thing. So far I haven't seen evidence that Hyundai is being cheap or difficult with warranty claims - they've been pretty good about replacing stuff. At least stuff they can get parts for; some of the audio and DIS knob stories have been "we'll change it as soon as parts are available." I'd be very surprised if your dealer gives you grief about replacing the sunshade. If they do, find a different one - it's not their money being spent anyway - it's Hyundai corporate that pays for warranty work.

I do plan on having the dealer address the rattle issues but I'm waiting until my first free oil change is due in about another month. I'll report back after that.
