  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How fast will a standard 3.8L Gennie go?

I was on my way to my office on Saturday and, since it was Saturday, I decided to jump on the Freeway. I take surface streets to work, so this is the first time I've been on the freeway since I brought the car home from the dealership 3 weeks ago. I turned onto the onramp, gave it my normal push on the gas, and accelerated. I didn't even glance at the speedometer during this process until I had been on the freeway perhaps 1/8 of a mile, then I looked down and realized I was going 85. I don't think I had the gas pedal down more than half. I was amazed at how smoothly and quietly my Gennie accelerated and how the road noise wasn't much greater on the freeway at 85 than on the road at 35. So my question is, has anybody found a quiet stretch of freeway in the middle of nowhere and put the pedal to the floor just to see what she'll do? At first I thought the 160 MPH speedometer was Hyundai's idea of a joke, but now I'm not so sure.

On a private airfield I had the speedo needle bouncing of the Stop..
(timed 164.3mph - long run),,phewwwww
I can dream can't I -- :D:D:D:D

There is a speed limiter, so it will not go to 160 even if the drivetrain were capable of that. Someone may have posted the top speed elsewhere on this forum.

I don't know what the limit is but I drove at 142mph on a turnpike late one night. It was still accelerating when I chicken out. Didn't want to get a big ticket from the troopers or go to jail that night, DUI if you know what I mean. lol

There are a few videos on YouTube of the genesis sedan hitting 255-260km/h but they are non-US versions. Either way around that's insanely fast in a car that is questionable in stability over 110mph, ever been @80+MPH and noticed how much flex the hood has?...that alone is enough to convince me to not try 150MPH+ lol.

On a private and will not disclose competitive automotive "test oval", straights hit high 140s, and stable as can be, with the V6.. Based on that, it is capable of getting to 160 (may be governed to less than that). My TAU V8 has not been on the track yet, it will go much higher.

And the ride was a smooth and stable one. Tires at 40/40, and car inspected. No hood flutter observed. If one wanted, could be driven with two fingers. 8 speed has great ratios.. Unlike the new Corvette 7 speed which gets its top speed in 5th, Genny uses more of the gears to accelerate quickly over 100, and be in the power band more per gear than many other odd geared transmissions.

I did not observe hood flutter, or any stability problems. Could have been driven with two fingers. Tires at 40/40, and the car was inspected.

I agree with DRS. This thing is a pleasure to drive at 100+. I feel the 6 speed does a wonderful job of accelerating hard as well...at least the ZF.

I get that OneFun. And I bet the ratios chosen on the 6 speed bullet proof ZF are done right. So, good acceleration above 100. These are great cars.

About Mach .2.

2012 3.8 is lmited to 133mph (H tire spec max) even if you Get it with V rated 18's. base commands THE LIMITER. ROCK SOLID AT THAT SPEED ON SUMMER TIRES.

You sound like an idiot.

I hit 145mph in my '14 RSpec, I was on the interstate trying to rush home and didn't realize how fast I was going. Once I looked down and saw the speed I slowed WAY down.

I hope the '14 is more stable at speed than the first gens are. I went about 110 in my '11 4.6, and the front felt really squirrelly. I feel safer in my M5 at 150 than I do in my Gen going 90. The Gen is definitely quieter and smoother, but much less stable.

my 2012 3.8 on 18" OEM tires & wheels was stable to at least 110mph with michellin energysavers at 33psi on less than good roads. '14 Rspec @40psi 255/35/19 Nitto Motivos is rock solid as well.

You expect anyone to buy that you didn't realize you were going 145? C'mon - be real!
