  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

No Genesis Yet!
I am looking at a 2017 G80 that does not have Apple Carplay. I believe I have to get the Utimate package to get that. I did see a G80 5.0 Ultimate that had it, but not sure I need 8 cylinders.

Should this be an important "have to have" or is it not that big of a deal? I have been using my iPhone for years in a 2007 Honda Odyssey and lived to tell about it....and I had to run a 15 ft aux cord from the headphone inputs in the 3row meant for the kids to watch TV. I am ready for some luxury in my life and just fell in love test driving the G80.

Also, when Hyundai moved Genesis to their own line, was that only a marketing move or is there any big difference from one year to the next.

This is a little off topic, but where does the Equus fall, in terms of the G80? I haven't looked at one, but they seem somewhat similar.

Equus is now the G90

A few people can't survive with out CP or AA. I have the option but don't use it. I don't see the need for my driving. The on screen navigation works for me.

As for moving to the Genesis brand, the car is pretty much the same but expectations for a luxury experience are in the works. Some dealers have done well, others, not so much yet. Needs another yer or two to mature and SUV line to be dealer profitable.

I HAD to have Apple Car Play once I used it in a rental car, mainly for music and especially with the touch screen. You can stream iheart radio channels using carplay, run waze and other apps on the larger screen in the G80. It uses siri voice commands to call or send text messages to your contacts, which is cool in my opinion. Having the map run from the phone is nice too.

I paid $200 to update my car to Carplay and now I never use it. The car already did pretty much everything I needed between the built in Nav and plugging my phone in. Just depends on your uses.

Carplay is standard in 2018 models, in 2017 only the base model with the 8" touch only system can be upgraded to Carplay, the Ultimate, with the 9+" screen and the jog dial cannot.

if you want carplay then you have to get a base 2017 or any 2018 model.

is it worth it? meh the Bluetooth system works just as well, the only real advantage I see with carplay is being able to use siri for SMS dictation, and for me personally, I don't text or talk and drive so it makes no difference.

I can stream pandora, spotify, iheart just fine through wired or Bluetooth without carplay,.

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
One of our cars has it and the other doesn’t and to be honest I miss it in the one that doesn’t have it.

When I use CP I rarely have to touch the phone and just use the screen interface to pick a playlist, view WAZE/google maps, etc. Plus the audio quality is a little better over USB than it is over Bluetooth streaming.

Thanks for the correction. I got it wrong (again).

No your statement was correct. The ultimate cannot get CarPlay... the opposite of what the OP was thinking.

IMO, the lack of Apple CarPlay isn't a deal breaker — I knew my 2017 G90 didn't have CarPlay when I leased it. However, CarPlay and Android Auto have a few advantages over built-in navigation:
  1. Map and POI updates don't have to be uploaded to the vehicle, and they're more frequent.
  2. There's a wider variety of map apps that offer different features from the Genesis system.
  3. Real-time traffic information is much better. Where I live, I only see conditions for major thoroughfares with SiriusXM Traffic, and it's often incorrect. The phone apps provide much wider coverage that changes frequently.
One drawback to CarPlay is the requirement for a wired connection to the phone. I'd rather keep the phone in my pocket or drop it in the charging compartment without having to use a cable. Wireless CarPlay is available from BMW and a few others, but it's not widely deployed yet.

Wireless CarPlay also typically requires a monthly fee, as it requires a hotspot WiFi Network in the car it does not broadcast over Bluetooth.

Most makes that offer hot spot have outrageous monthly fees for minimal data plans. 5gb for $50-$70/mo.

It’s a shame that car makers won’t allow customers to use their own hotspot to connect the car and phone fore wireless CarPlay. My hotspot gives me unlimited data for $40/mo

I have used wireless carplay in both an Audi and a BMW without having to use any wifi hotspot. Both worked pretty seamlessly - just like using Bluetooth.

Are you saying you just did a Bluetooth pairing of your phone and CarPlay worked?
