  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Did anyone recently purchased a new Genesis from a dealer out of state to have registered in NYS ? My question is how long should it take to get the new license plates? Is 6 weeks about right as per NYS DOT ?

You said “New Genesis”.
1. Did you get a temporary paper tag in the purchases State?
2. Did you pay State Tax in your purchased State? if so, has NYS got the sales tax from the selling state? (I refuse to pay state sales tax in the selling state, only in the state the car will bevregistered and titled in).
3. Did you hand carry the Bill of Sale papers and the MSO to the NYS DMV?

if you have the selling dealer send the paperwork to NYS, you may have a LONG WAIT.

When I lived in NYS, I purchased a vehicle in Wisconsin. Took all the paperwork to NYS DMV, paid the
sales tax and got the Plates and registration right then and there. Title came ten days later.

Of all the bad things I could say about my former NYS, one good thing is when I purchased a car in NYS to drive it back to my new home state of Florida, Dealer got me a paper “ Certificate of Transit”
to get car out of State within 30 days. Brought all the paperwork with me. Paid Florida sales tax, received registration and Florida title arrived two weeks later.

BTW. One bad thing about buying in Florida. You must pay Florida sales tax even if you are going to drive it out the next day. Then your home state will have to fight Florida to get the sales tax. Only way to not pay the Florida sales tax is to tow, trailer or truck the car out of Florida.

May not have anything to do with the above, but Florida and perhaps other states has the Title in the state computers. If I want a Paper Title, I have to request it and pay $20.

Thanks for your detailed response. I did get a paper temporary tag from Maryland and paid the dealer NYS taxes. The Maryland dealer is sending me another temporary tag as the first one is expiring. Also, they are assuring me that because of COVID this process is taking much longer and states aren’t enforcing the regulations on the expired tags.

My dealer sent the information/paperwork/check to my dmv but then I had to physically go there and fill out the forms and get plates. I don’t think you’ll be getting any plates sent to you.

edit: this was for an out of state purchase and then me registering it in nys.

How did you know that the dmv had your plates to pick up ?

I had received a tracking number from the dealer (it was sent via ups) and then the dmv called me once the documents had arrived. I then had to schedule an appointment (they were doing appointments only because of covid) and go to the dmv to finish the registration process, pay a small fee that wasn’t included with my payment at the dealer, then they gave me the plates. I believe I had to bring my contact/sale information as well as proof of insurance (I would double check what the dmv needs).
