  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

How many times do you open the hood per year?

You mean there is some way that you can actually open the hood :eek:

I wipe the engine down at least every other washing (which this time of year I try to do weekly).

Other than that, I try to pop it open every few weeks to check fluids.

Just opened it for the second time in nearly two years. First time was to have a look what was under there. Second time was to replace washer fluid. I have Hyundai service my car: it's not convenient when you live in an apartment to do it oneself, and I'm totally over having oil and grease under my fingernails. Owning a '77 Firebird got me over that really quick. ;)

I pop the hood while drying the car after it gets a bath... so I can dry the edges of the hood, the plastic bits above the radiator, etc. That's generally twice a month. And I give the fluids a once-over while I'm there, look for signs of leaks anyplace, etc. I like tinkering with my cars and it's a point of pride to have a clean engine compartment. I still remember the reaction of my local smog test-only guy. (for you non Californians: Cali sends older cars to "test only" smog centers; they can't do any repairs if you flunk the test. Dumb) When he popped the hood of my then-18 year old Starion and saw a grease-free, clean, almost shiny engine his reaction was "Holy cow! I never see them like this! Normally they're a filthy mess! Wow, I can even read the timing marks!"

For my other cars, I do all of the maintenance myself - and that includes heavy jobs like clutch replacements. I've "pulled" the engine on 2 other cars to do some of those big jobs; takes me about 3 hours to have an engine out. The Genesis so far though has been dealer serviced... since it's only had the initial (free) oil change and one other... and I had something I wanted checked under warranty anyway. It will be visiting the dealer soon though for "the common Tech problems": XM going stupid, FM sometimes forgetting the frequency when the car is parked, and the seat cooling not what it used to be. We'll see if I can twist their arm for a NAV update... my car is outside the sales date for the free 2009 update.

Awesome, you have a Starion!! Which trim level!!?? I have a heart for these cars, but never owned one, although a friend in high school did own a red one.

I open it to refill my windshield wiper fluid mostly. Rain-X fluid is da bomb.

Rain X fluid is great. I got the concentrate so you can mix it to any dilution you want, summer versus winter and (not that it's expensive per say), but a little bottle, I believe makes 5 gallons.

About once a month when I need to check something or while cleaning the car.
