  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

unfortunately, I can't modify the thread. My phone must love some peppery.

What you are asking varies widely. For example in the state of Georgia each county sets its tax rates on cars, trucks and other equipment that is tagged. Many states in U.S. have very low tax (maybe no tax) on cars and others have huge amounts and some cities have taxes in addtion to state and county tax. Its like state income taxes, some states have no income tax others like New York state and California have high taxes.

In CT, a brand new 4.6L will probably run well into the $600's...

I wonder what it is in Oregano?

Kidding aside, are you saying the the cars are taxed as "property" after purchase? I've never heard of that, only sales tax at time of purchase.
Wow.

Several states have property tax levied on vehicles. Some states like CA call it a registration fee and it is calculated on the value of the vehicle. Though it is the same as property tax it is not deductable of the Federal income tax form like property tax is. Here in SC we pay 5% or a maximum of $300 sales tax on vehicle sales regardless of price, we then get an annual bill for property tax on all of our cars. This year the tax on all of my cars and motorcycle was about $900. The property tax on my house was a similar amount. Considering that 18 years ago in CA my registration fee for a new SHO Taurus was $1000 annually and the sales tax was $1550 I am getting off pretty well.

Here in Georgia a car that is tagged in the Metro Atlanta area will be taxed at as much as twice the amount of tax charged in a small rural county in Georgia.
Also the sales tax is 7% of the total price paid.

I will have to pay 1700 in tax and fee for to register my car. on top of that is the yearly personal property tax.

I'm in SC and I paid just under $700 the first year, last year was right around $600 and this year I expect it to be in the $500 range based on my successful appeal for high mileage and assessed value. As a previous posted stated our sales tax is capped at $300 when we buy the car, but they get the money out of us over time.

Back in the 90's I lived in Louisiana and we payed whatever sales tax rate for the parish we lived in (typically ~8%, but higher in places like Orleans parish) all up front but there were no vehicle property taxes, although registration fees and other taxes were quite a bit higher.

In the end it's all just different ways to get your money.

Good to live in Tennessee. No state income tax ( except 6% on capital gains and dividends) no personal property tax. tags are $24 Some county's do have a wheel tax.:cool:

412 in MN last year... rate based on value of car, minimum is 99.
