  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I thought I'd use them a lot more than I do. I used them a lot on the track in Korea, but now that I own a 2nd gen I can't even remember the last time I used them.

haven't used them yet and only used them maybe 4 times on the optima..

I just play around with them from time to time. Haven't found a real need for them yet.

P. shifters are nice in the mountains - useless anywhere else

I just wish Sport mode would keep it in 8th gear, but allow it to downshift faster when needed. And it should allow the paddles to hold a gear without having to throw the floor shifter into manual. Oh well....It's not a lambo ;-)

the preprogrammed shift points are actually pretty good in both standard and sport mode.

I used mine once or twice when I first got the car. I've actually never used them more than once or twice in any of the cars I've owned. Most modern automatics shift very well on their own, and Sport mode in the Genesis is great for when I'm feeling a little frisky. Also, like most paddle shifted automatics the response is too slow. If there were any time that I'd want to use them, that would be the time that I'd want the transmission to shift immediately (like a good double-clutch gearbox).

I use the down shift to drop a gear when overtaking or I want to accelerate up a hill. Gets me in the correct gear before making the manoeuvre. I find them useful. A little tip is to hold the up shift for 2 or 3 seconds and the drive goes back to 'D' It goes back automatically but can take a while.

I used to use the downshift a lot on my 2.0T Sonata because I have to deal with a long downhill stretch on the commute home. I tried gearing down in my 5.0 but with the 8 speed at highway speeds, I have to drop 5 gears before I can slow down enough. I've had to warranty the downshift paddle on my Sonata 3 times in the 5 years I've had it.

I don't have any complaints about the paddle shifters. They work better for me than the stick shifter, which I had in my Lincoln MKS and of course the Genesis. I agree with the poster who pointed out they are good for hilly terrain. Here in DC all we get is traffic, and the Appalachians really are no challenge for the automatic. I think the shift points are well positioned.

I use the manual shifters when I'm driving in a mountain, every time :)

I got rid of a 2002 Honda Civic SI that I drove for 12 years. After 12 years of shifting, I don't plan on going back. I used the paddle shifters once when I first got the car, haven't touched them since. The tranny in this car is awesome, no need to improve on profection. :D
