  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I've looked and can't figure this one out. I'm trying to play music from a collection I have that I can 'permanently' put in the car - either by copying to the hard drive, or by leaving a dedicated thumb drive in the USB port. I've not found instructions in the manuals. Some infer I can copy files, others infer I can play directly from the thumb drive, some infer you can do neither with my car (I would need an 'ultimate' which I don't have).

Sorry to ask this question that I'm dumbfounded not to have found answered yet... :woot: Please advise if you have knowledge (i.e. please don't guess).

thanks

I can only tell you what I do. ('15 Ultimate) not sure this will work on other Genesis levels.

1] plug the USB into the USB port (MEDIA should be displayed)
2] USB data (music) starts to play
3] select MENU (should be on top of display)
4] select COPY ALL, if you wish to copy all on the USB.
5] all the songs copied should be downloaded into JUKE BOX
6] if you want to hear music downloaded select JUKE BOX and choose whichever album/artist/etc. you wish to listen to.
I'm doing this from memory, but I believe that's the way it works.
I have also downloaded Pandoro (free) on my phone. To listen to Pandora all I do is depress the speak button and say "Pandora radio"). It automatically starts playing the selected Pandora albums from my phone and displays the song & artist on the touch screen.

Before posting, I tried inserting a USB thumbdrive and got the error message "This device does not support media function". Since you replied, on a whim I tried another thumbdrive - this time it worked. Interesting. The first thumbdrive appears to be 16GB. The 2nd device is only 2GB. Hmmm - maybe size matters. 2GB is not big enough - does anyone have a clue here why the larger one is rejected and the smaller is fine?

For now I've put in a 2GB thumb drive and it appears to be working fine. One nice feature is that it appears to remember where you left off when you power the car down. The bothersome piece is that I like to shuffle all songs and repeat - that does not seem to be remembered.

I just found another post: https://genesisowners.com/hyundai-genesis-forum/archive/index.php/t-15191.html In this other post they talk about limits and also format of the thumbdrive (one user stated it needs to be FAT32). I've ordered a 16GB thumb drive, put all my songs on it and play around to get it working. I'll then post the results. Thanks.

The songs must be MP3 (usually the case) and the file system must be FAT32 (usually the case) and up to 32 GB is the max recommended size for the thumb drive. This is the best quality sound you can get in the car, BTW. Past 32GB you are wasting a good bit of space because the clusters are so large.

a 2gb usb drive is OLD too. thats def a slower usb2.0 vs the 32gb usb3.0 i use.

I now realize there is a separate manual just for the head unit. I read it. Fat is the required format (8,16 or 32 bit). They state some incompatibility with some manufacturer drives and list those they endorse. My 16GB drive came in so I put all my songs on it. It is fine to play from.

Unfortunately I do NOT have an option to save the entire list of songs; I can only do them one song at a time. What a pain - I'm going to call Hyundai NA to make sure there's something I didn't miss.

Use FAT32 for the file system. Nearly all thumb drives sold come pre-formatted to FAT32.
What are you using to copy the music to the thumb drive? One at a time seems terrible.

After 45 minutes (no kidding) being passed from person to person at Hyundai and the Genesis support line - the last dude took the action to research and find out then call me back.

Sure enough, for my car (2015 5.0 Genesis - not Ultimate), the ONLY way to do saves from devices to the internal 6GB storage entitled 'my music' is ONE SONG AT A TIME. Needless to say all the reps I spoke to couldn't conceive that this was the only way. Per 'Victor' at Genesis - it turns out it is the only way. Unbelievable.

Looks like I'll leave my USB drive in the car!

Seejay - sorry - missed your question. the files have been previously rendered to .mp3 and reside on my computer. I'm simply using Windows Explorer and let it do its thing; when I have more complicated or large bulk copies - I use RoboCopy.

And yes, to your comment - this is a pretty lame copy protocol Hyundai has employed in their firmware considering today's technologies.

OK, now I understand. I don't copy them, I just play them from the USB drive.

YUP - right on target. The ironic thing is that each of the reps I dealt with - when they finally grasped what I was going on - they were all at a loss. As I shared with them - if only the people tasked with writing the software (in this case firmware) were tasked with living with it in their everyday lives - it would work perfectly!
