  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm sure it's been asked before but I'd like to get an opinion from a transmission expert.

Does manually shifting the 8 speed cause damage to it?

Understand, I come from a GM 4L60E background. You manually shift one of those, especially manually downshifting, and you're in trouble.

Will I affect the long term reliability of the transmission by using the manual mode, especially downshifting it manually?

I don't think you can hurt the 8 speed. Even though you put it in manual mode the computer won't allow a shift if it will get the engine out of a safe range. For instance, if the engine will be below 1000 RPM (I think that is the limit) or above red line after the shift then it won't allow the shift. I know that if you are in manual mode and you just come to a stop the transmission will down shift to keep the engine from lugging.
On a 4L60E or 4L80E, if you move the shifter, the transmission will shift regardless of engine speed. Even into reverse or park I believe.
