I have a app claim form due to the Hyundai think tank. The forms says the estimated invoice price of the car I want is $38485.00. Edmunds and the dealer say the invoice price is $40,650. And of course then you add back advertising and shipping, and subtract out 3% of msrp. If the price of the invoice is really $40,650 it is easy to beat the final price. Has anyone else run into this??

Yes and Yes. When I was ready to buy I also thought that I would just show up to any Hyundai dealer and hand them my HAPP claim form and walk out the door with a new car at a fair price. (HA) First off dealers have the option to pass on your HAPP pricing. As one dealer put it we don't participate on that model.

You can call the number listed 1-714-965-3000 x3129. And see what dealer they will recommend in your area. I talked to Gail and she seamed willing to help if I was stoned walled by my local dealers.

What I did was work from the HAPP pricing and offer what the true cost would be including freight add fee & TT&L. Sent several dealers fleet sales director my offer and contacted the ones that replied. It took several phone calls and e-mails to get the deal but I never set foot into the dealer until they were ready to make the deal. I bought at the end of the month and bought a 2010 that had been on the lot 1 month. Good luck You can get a good deal you just have to find the right dealer. When I purchased my Genesis I geeked out and ran all the numbers for the APP pricing on the 2010. I purchased prior to the invoice prices being posted for the 2010's. What I discovered is what I think you are going through. I could be wrong, but the numbers added up with the 2009's when I was doing my research.

What the dealer is doing is taking the total invoice to include the Freight and AD fee both for invoice and MSRP and working from those numbers to get the invoice. What they should be doing is working from the invoice price BEFORE freight and AD fee and subtract 3% of the MSRP prior to freight and AD fee. Then add $800 Freight and AD fee (Mine was $150 in a small market). Then any rebates per the APP website.

Bottom line is that the dealer is charging you twice for freight and AD fee. You make a little back with the 3% off total MSRP instead of 3% off MSRP before freight and AD fee.

Go back to Edmunds and get the invoice and MSRP total prior to freight and AD fee. Work those numbers and see if they add up to the invoice that you received from APP. I believe it will add up to the $38485. Then add freight and AD fee (dealer should show you the invoice and the AD fee is on there) and that is the real APP price. Not the double dip on freight and AD fee that they are telling you.

For me the above is what my dealer did to me and I knew they were doing it. Like stated above they do not have to honor the price. I heard from a friend who sellls Hyundai that the dealership does not get any kickbacks for selling under the APP program. Just a way to move inventory. (Can not truly confirm the prior statement, just what I was told) It was cheaper for me to let them make a little off the sale then hunt around and drive to a big city to possibly get the true APP deal. Still ended up below invoice and I walked away feeling good about the deal. I kept it professional and let the sales manager know that I knew what they were doing and was fine with it. I started the 2010 price paid thread and you can see the numbers that I paid. Some have done better. Bottom line is that you walk away happy about the price or you will never be able to truly enjoy the car.
