If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I own a 2012 4.6 Hyundai Genesis with the technology package. The other day the center console knob came off while I was in the middle of changing satellite channels. I went to the Hyundai Dealership to order the knob but I was told that I would have to pay $400.00 for the unit (called a Keyboard Control Switch part number 96540-3M300-GS) when all I need is the knob. I've tried going to the local junkyard but there aren't many wrecked Genesis in this area (with the technology package). My question is does anyone here know how I can go about getting this knob without have to spend a fortune for it? $400.00 is just too much for a knob.

Is there any way to repair the knob? It looks like they don't just sell the DIS knob by itself.

I've tried to find a way to repair the knob that is broken by taking it to several places hoping that they can fabricate a fix but to no avail.

Not unusual to have situations like that where you have to buy an expensive unit for a small part. I've never looked at how the knob attaches so I don't have any idea what can replace it. Perhaps if you posted a photo of the underside of the knob and what it attaches ro someone will have a suggestion.

Some junkyards are part of a large network for parts too. Maybe you can find one willing to search.. eBay has a switch that has a knob that may be like yours

I have a spare knob from my '11 4.6 with Tech package I would be willing to part with. The question then becomes will it be for the right "keyboard"? Does your keyboard have the "Back" button in the lower left and the knob glows blue from underneath? I ask because the keyboards on my old 4.6 and current R-Spec are different and believe it was a change made on the 1 to 1.5 generations.

The knob is sold separately, which I think is what they quoted you. The part # they gave you is for the keyboard, which $400 is almost $200 below dealer cost. The knob part # I'm coming up with is 96544-3M020 and lists at $298.44. I'm thinking they quoted you the knob, and just jacked the price up even higher. I could do $225 shipped for the knob if you want. But, get me your VIN so I can verify the part #.

The VIN number is KMHGC4DF4CU179096. I also have another question. When I purchased this car I bought a platinum warranty to go along with the manufacturer warranty thinking this would cover situations like this. I was told that the platinum warranty covers maintenance matters only. I cry foul on this. That's not what I was told when I purchased the warranty along with buying a 2nd Hyundai Genesis (2016) model for my wife.

It would help to be more specific than just saying you bought the "Platinum Warranty." Can you find the paperwork and tell us the exact name of the warranty you purchased? Looking at the warranty paperwork, what are the terms of the warranty?

It looks like what they sold you is completely aftermarket. I ran your VIN, and there is no extended warranty or service contract on file with Hyundai.

It may not even be a warranty, it could just be a service contract for routine maintenance. Or it could be a warranty, but excludes wear and tear items like knobs, or maybe there is a deductible. But I would not be surprised if it is a 3rd party warranty that covers it (possibly underwritten by the dealer), but the dealer is just lying about whether it is covered.

In any case, one needs to find the terms of the "warranty" and read them.

Mark_888, I replaced my DIS (Driver Info System). I still have the old one, from which you can remove/reuse the knob.
I'll gladly part of it for just shipping cost.
PM me to arrange for shipping.

Based on the picture I am 99% sure I have the correct knob. If you are interested let me know and we can arrange shipping.

OMG.... I have the exact same issue with my Genesis..... Its the KNOB!!!!!! I really don't want to have to pay an egregious price when its certainly just the knob. The dealer here wants to charge me $135 just to look at it. If someone has just the DIS knob............. I will certainly pay for it!

What year Genesis do you own? I have a DIS knob from my 2009 4.6; which is different than the knob on my 2014 R-Spec.

I got one off eBay.
Works perfectly.

Good afternoon.

Related question:

On my 2012 Sedan R-Spec (not under warranty--I'm the 3rd owner), the "select" or "enter" switch that is activated by pushing down on the DIS knob has become finicky.

Every now & then, it takes tremendous force pushing down to close the switch. It tends to be fussy for a period of time (a couple of weeks) & then behave well for weeks or months before it fusses again.

Has anybody opened up the 96540-3M300-GS assembly to see if this switch is accessible & what sort of switch it is? (I'm assuming it's a $2 microswitch...?).

Per this video (
), it doesn't seem difficult to get to that subassembly, but I'm not sure if the subassembly itself is serviceable.

Thank you!

Hi Jason. I replaced DIS with one I got off ebay. So I took the old one and if you're OK with tools, it's really easy to take it apart.
Take off the knob/dial, like you take off those on a stove/oven.
Turn it upside down.
It's about 8-10 tiny nuts to remove and the whole bottom comes out.
There are several layers but eventually you reach the center "switch".
I think there's nothing to do with the PCB.
That switch is the source of all evil...
I tried initially a dust cleaner which did nothing and then Electrical Contact Cleaner (can you believe WD-40 has obe?).
Unfortunately none has worked. I think this switch was almost like a molded one piece.
It has a part number and I could find the manufacturer is local. I sourced it online over that weekend and found it's about $99. I got the used unit, with a year warranty for $106...
Never bothered to call.
I could clearly see that coke was spilled on it (The cup older is very close...).
But I couldn't clean inside that switch.
I still have have it, don't know why... Maybe I'm still challenged...
I no longer own that amazing monster. I traded it for another amazing beat, a 2016 Sonata hybrid limited ultimate. I'm still the fastest but I average 41mpg...
Hope I helped!

How do you supermen get the shift knob off? I pulled & pulled but couldn't budge it. Is it bonded on? Any recommended technique?

Since supermen seem to be super good at keeping their super secrets, I was forced to exercise my brain & overcome adversity.

Solution:
- big big crowbar with a slot on the short curved end
- hook it around the shaft, under the knob
- place down lots of shop rags on the plastic console
- place a long long screwdriver on the console just next to the shift knob to act as a fulcrum for the crowbar & to provide something stiff to distribute the reaction force over a larger area & to place those forces on components stronger than the plastic housing immediately next to the shift knob
- lift the long end of the crowbar gently
- shift knob comes off cleanly & with little effort
- underside of shift knob is slightly scratched--should have put another shop rag on the underside of the shift knob so that the crowbar wouldn't nibble it

Thanks, Jason
You're welcome, Jason.
